World Kidney Day to be observed March 11

World Kidney Day (WKD) was created in 2006 to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health, and to reduce the incidence of kidney disease and related health problems worldwide.

This year, the theme for WKD is "control diabetes." We know that diabetes is a major risk factor for chronic kidney disease. In observance of WKD, NKF-MD is conducting a KEY screening at Annapolis City Hall on March 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

KEY screenings planned for spring

KEY screenings are a very effective way of identifying individuals who are in the early stages of kidney disease and unaware of that fact. On average, one-third of the people NKF-MD screens at KEYs are found to have test results outside the normal range, and are urged to follow up with a physician. These are people who previously did not know they were at such risk.

Eight KEY (Kidneys: Evaluate Yours) screenings are planned for the Baltimore metropolitan area so far this year. The schedule is available on the NKF-MD home page.

NKF-MD is grateful to the physicians, nurse-practitioners and lay volunteers who are generously donating their time to staff these screenings.

Memorial golf tournament set for Salisbury
There are many ways that you can support NKF-MD. One of them is by holding an event and donating the proceeds to the foundation.

golf clip artThe Phillips family lost their beloved son and brother, Michael, to kidney disease last May at the age of 26. Michael, affectionately known as Blue Crab, was a natural athlete and enjoyed playing golf with his brother, father and grandfather.

To keep Michael Phillips' memory alive, his family will hold the first annual Blue Crab Golf Tournament on May 24 at Nutters Crossing Golf Course in Salisbury. The tournament is open to anyone who would like to play. Learn more at the event website, www.bluecrabgolfing.org.

New NKF-MD fund-raiser celebrates grapes, hops, great food

Sante logoPlanning is well under way for NKF-MD's exciting new fund-raiser, Sante: An Epicurean Adventure. Sante will take place Sunday, June 13 at the American Visionary Art Museum in downtown Baltimore.

Sante brings together fine wine, craft beer and spirits and pairs them with delicious food from some of Baltimore's most popular restaurants, such as Linwoods, The Wine Market, Corks, Gertrude's and the B&O American Brasserie.

Some of the nation's most acclaimed craft breweries will pour their beers, including Allagash, Flying Dog, Anchor, Stone and Lagunitas. A variety of Belgian and German beers will be offered as well.

The afternoon event will include live music from two bands, interactive wine education, guided spirits tastings, celebrity chef demonstrations and a silent auction. Tickets are $75 to $100 and go on sale April 1.

"All through the long winter, I dream of my garden. On the first day of spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth. I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar."
