Support Patient Emergency Assistance fund

Helping Patients logoKidney and transplant patients often need help with daily expenses, such as transportation, medication, rent and utilities. Many find themselves unable to work because of their illness. One of the ways the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland reaches out to assist patients is through its Patient Emergency Assistance program. And we need your financial support to be able to continue this vital program. Click here to donate.

One local dialysis patient developed kidney disease as a result of an HIV infection received during a sexual assault. This young woman also became the primary caretaker for her sister's four children when she was 19. Her financial challenges are significant.

NKF-MD has been there to help this patient with emergency grants for food, rent and BGE bills. Says her dialysis social worker: "This patient is now working a part-time job and has community agencies involved with her foster children. Life is not easy, but would have been much more difficult without the support of NKF-MD."

Several patients have been able to avoid homelessness thanks to PEA grants, and others have been able to obtain necessary medical equipment, such as a blood pressure monitor, with this assistance.

Won't you help us keep this important program going? Please click here to donate.

This year, Beyond Dialysis, NKF-MD's wonderful day of fellowship, learning and enjoyment for dialysis patients, expanded to include patients from Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore. The event has been offered in the Baltimore area for four years and recently won an Affiliate Award from the national office of the National Kidney Foundation.

On Oct. 4, luncheons took place at Martin's West in Woodlawn, the Milford Senior Center in Milford, Del., and Duffy's on Potomac in Hagerstown. Each event featured an inspiring speaker, a nutritious lunch, and educational exhibits from health care organizations.

Following the event, a social worker sent a note with these comments: "What I'm hearing from patients is that it was a rip-roaring success! One lady .. called to let me know. I could hear her smile over the phone. A very poor patient, I knew that this day out was a special day, too."
