Rhythms of the Heart! A Celebration of Latin Music!

with the Students of Papago School

May 13th & 14th  Herberger Theater Stage West
 7:00pm.

During the 2008-2009 school year, Phoenix Conservatory of Music (PCM) and Papago Elementary School have partnered to produce the project Rhythms of the Heart: A Celebration of Latin Music!  The project is a year long after school residency that was developed with the idea of providing this very under served, impoverished community with the opportunity to be mentored by internationally acclaimed artists from Flor Y Piedra, Nosotrosound, and Ruth Lara Vichules for 3 hours per week after school for a year of music learning fun!

After one amazing school year of the Flamenco and Guitar Students working with their mentor artists, Flor Y Piedra, the artists, PCM, Papago School and our wonderful students will present: Rhythms of the Heart with the Students of Papago School on May 13th and 14th at the Herberger Theater Stage West, 7:00pm.

They will be joined by Special Guest Artists: Callo Flamenco's Martin Gaxiola, Johnny Sandoval, Lynn Woolover among many others!

This Flamenco pop show includes energy driven hits, Spoken word moments and percussion motivated pieces with exciting guitar solos, vocal expressions, clapping, snapping and heelwork that will leave you breathless and your heart pounding!

Come and Celebrate the beauty and collaboration of the novice student and professional artist!  These  at risk 3rd through 7th graders from Papago School have been studying 3 hours a week for the entire school year, learning Flamenco Dance and Music including heel work, palmas, cajones, guitar, and castinet.

They have studied and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists Peter Torsiello and Liliana de Leon of Flor Y Piedra to take those basics and together created original works that will be performed on the professional stage!

Join them as they join with their professional mentors, and a large professional performing ensemble, on May 13th and 14th at 7:00pm and get your blood pumping in music that lifts the spirit, and feeds the imagination!
The Project
The project is multi layered and includes:

Two semesters of Flamenco: Dance and Music.  Students will be led by two teaching artists, Peter Torsiello and Liliana de Leon from Flor Y Piedra   They will learn sequential step by step artistic processes in flamenco dance and music including, but not limited to tangos, Cajon, and Palmas.

Two semesters of Latin American folk music with artist Hector Martinez of Nosotrosound. They will learn sequential step by step artistic processes in flamenco traditional Latin American folk music with guitar and pan pipe flute, including songs from Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Brazil, and others.

Two semesters of World music with artist Ruth Lara Vichules. They will learn about artistic processes in world traditional music while using technology and books to travel the globe.

Together, the Phoenix Conservatory of Music and Papago Elementary School created the following goals for the project:

1. For the students to have a safe haven for their after school time.

2. For the students to learn sequential step by step process based arts learning that reinforces reading, writing, and math through a quality process based learning model.

3. The students, with quality process based learning, will be able to create/play/dance to music of their specific genres with a competency and technique that is appropriate to the grade and age and align with state and national arts standards.

4. The students will build relationships with the teaching artists whose backgrounds and cultures are not too different from their own, making intrinsic growth and goal setting possible.

5. Culminate student learning in the artistic process by having the students work with professional performers in a professional venue and creating a work that includes original and traditional pieces that celebrate the heritage, culture, and soul of the Latin people.

The urban area where the school is located is not a safe place.  Students don't have anywhere to go after school.  By having a safe environment that fosters learning; students will be more encouraged to participate and do well with learning and they and the neighborhood will be safer.
