President's Message

MAPTA President Debbi YeeDear, !

November, the month of Thanksgiving, has arrived. After 42 years, MAPTA has many, many past and present individuals to thank for the longevity of this organization.

Please take time this month to thank any of the following members:

  • Past-Presidents: I now am very aware of the tremendous amount of free time these individuals have given to MAPTA in order for it to continue to thrive.
  • Other officers: The time the secretary, treasurer, vice-president and past-president devote to the maintenance of important records is invaluable to MAPTA.
  • Committee chairs: Throughout the years many members have devoted numerous hours to organize and direct valuable activities for MAPTA.
  • Businesses: Various businesses and individuals not associated with MAPTA have given valuable information and many times valuable resources.

Three members deserve special recognition for the tireless hours they have devoted to the upcoming Piano Play Together. Jeanne Felix, Patty Ladpli and Diane Madsen have devoted much of their free time to the organization and production of a spectacular event.

Please come and be a part of this momentous event on Sunday, November 21 at the Oregon High School, which will feature the premier of a composition written for MAPTA by Robert Vandall.

Looking forward...

Debbie Yee
MAPTA President

A wonderful program, "Ways to Incorporate Music History in the Piano Lesson," will be presented by our very own Dr. Denise Taylor.

Even a basic knowledge of music history can enrich your students' piano lessons, but teachers might not know where to begin. Dr. Taylor will share, in an informal style, ideas to enhance your lessons with music history.  Drawing from beginning, intermediate and early advanced piano repertoire from a variety of stylistic periods, she will give practical suggestions on getting your students fired up to play their pieces with greater understanding and enjoyment.

MAFOP Update

The 19th annual Key-Up-For-Kids Piano Playathon is Saturday, February 12, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm at Hilldale Shopping Center on Midvale Blvd.  Piano teachers will receive a letter in November with information for both teachers and students playing at the event.

This is an opportunity for students to play piano for pledges or on-site donations that will help children at the American Family Children's Hospital.  The Child Life program at the hospital is supported by donations, not patient or insurance funds, and offers children positive recreational activity not associated with medical treatment.  Directions on how to sign up for time are included in the letter.  Joanna Grace will be doing the scheduling for this playathon.

MAFOP wishes to thank all the students and teachers that participated in the Monster Concert on October 30, 2010.  This was held at Barnes & Noble at East Towne Mall.  Barnes & Noble generously donated a percentage of the day's profits to the American Family Children's Hospital.

Next MAFOP meeting:  Thursday, Nov. 18 at 8 AM Connie & Joel Jones' home.  All MAPTA members are welcomed to attend.

Questions?  Contact Renee Farley (608) 271-2626.

Piano Play Together  Sunday, Nov 21-  2:00 pm
Oregon High School Performing Arts Center

Thank you for all of your registrations for the upcoming Piano Play Together.  Deborah Ferris is adding the finishing touches to her narration to lead us into our theme of "Harmony for Humanity:  Making a Better World Through Music".  We have a total of 220 students registered with 23 teachers represented.  It is exciting for the committee to see the interest in the Piano Play Together sustain and grow.

All teachers involved should have already received a copy of the rehearsal schedules.  If you have not received your copy, please contact Patty Ladpli for one.  Teacher assignments are also being worked on, and when final, each teacher will be given a copy. It is up to each teacher to let his/her students know of their rehearsal times for each rehearsal.  Please remind your students to allow extra time for travel and parking.  They should be checking in at the first rehearsal (Steinway Piano Gallery) no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of their rehearsal.  These rehearsals are run to the minute and they may miss their rehearsal if they are late.  Only one family member/guardian should accompany the student.

At check-in at Steinway Piano Gallery, each student will receive specific information for the 2nd rehearsal in Oregon.

It is each teacher's responsbility to prepare their students  This includes insuring the piece is up to tempo, dynamics are observed and the student knows how to follow a conductor.

"Fanfare Celebration" (commissioned piece) will be videotaped during the concert.  Since it is a world premier performance, MAPTA would like to post the performance on YouTube.  We need all parents of sudents, or students (over 18), and teachers performing in "Fanfare Celebration" to sign a written consent to MAPTA's recording policy.  These forms are being collected by Diane Madsen.

MAPTA is going to have available piano book bags for a suggested donation price of $8/bag.  These bags will feature the MAPTA logo and the date and theme of this year's PPT.  These bags will be available at the rehearsal.

Important dates:
Mandatory rehearsal - Sun. Nov . 14 - Steinway Piano Gallery of Madison
Mandatory rehearsal - Sat. Nov . 20 Oregon Performing Arts Center Oregon H.S.
PPT Event - Sun. Nov 21 Oregon Performing Arts Center

Contact co-chairs Diane Madsen or Jeanne Felix with any questions.

Fall Music Social  Sunday, Nov 21-  7:00 pm
Cheri Lewis' Home - 1706 Wild Oak Circle, Madison

Please encourage all your adult students to participate in this year's Fall Adult Music Social. The event is fairly informal and will help pianists at all levels to become more comfortable sharing their music with others. Pieces can be memorized or played with music. Adult students who would like to first learn more about the social are also welcome to attend without playing that evening. Those attending are requested to bring a small plate of cookies or other food to share.

Call Cheri at (608) 222-5125 if you need directions or have questions.

Free Pianos for Needy Students - Deadline   Wednesday, Dec 15

Two students receiving free Piano Bank pianos last August

Keyboard, old piano or no piano? If you know of any students who need a good piano but can't afford one, the Steinway Piano Society can help.

In cooperation with the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music, the SPS Piano Bank makes free pianos available to qualifying students. The deadline for applications is approaching!

For more information or to receive an application, contact Andrea Mauch (608) 850-3566.

MAPTA Continuing Ed Scholarships

Scholarship funds are available to MAPTA members for attendance at non-MAPTA events, such as regional and national conferences, events, etc.  $500 has been allocated for such scholarships for the 2010-11 year.

A teacher must fill out this form and forward it to the Vice President (currently Dr. Gloria Chuang). Upon board approval and following the event, the member will submit an article for Nuances (about 200 words) and make a short presentation about the content at a MAPTA General Meeting.  Recipients will be reimbursed after submission of the article, and completion of presentation.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about piano teaching, and gain valuable knowledge which can in turn be shared within our MAPTA community!

Upcoming... Honors Festival

It is our honor to co-chair the Honors Festival 2011. Although it is still early in the year, we would like to encourage you to start thinking of any students you might have, 10 - 18 year olds, who might want to work towards the auditions taking place on Saturday, February 19th, 2011.

Students may play one or two pieces from memory within a 10-minute time slot for two wonderful guest judges. We highly encourage the preparation of unique and imaginative repertoire by lesser known composers, and look forward to an exciting Honors Recital on Sunday, March 6th.

The Registration Form will be available in an upcoming issue of Nuances.

Janet Smith & Helga Swatzak
