President's Message
Debbie Yee |
 Dear ,
Alas, the Madison music community has lost a dynamic individual. Martha Kilgor passed away on April 13. She was a respected piano tuner in the Madison area and a valuable member of MAFOP. Her expertise, energy and devotion will be missed. It is hard to believe that an entire year of my presidency has already passed. Its success would not have been possible without the wonderful support and cooperation of a superb board of directors and fellow officers. Thank you so much and I look forward to another great year with everyone. I would like to give special thanks to Denise Taylor for designing such a well organized and easy to read directory. Anita Schulz deserves a special round of applause for her staunch leadership of the professional goals committee through the creation of a new by-laws and the rewriting of chair responsibilities. Ben Garber spent many hours helping to secure the beautiful new logo for MAPTA. A special thank you goes to Linda Johnson for being persistent with both me and our web designer to create a very useful referral page on our website. Ruth Heinecke continued her excellent leadership of the Performing Supporting Performers which culminated in a beautiful recital attended by many MAPTA teachers in February. Cheri Lewis also continued her wonderful leadership of the Adult Music Socials. The Young Artist Recitals were well attended this year under the terrific guidance of Brian Hagen and Renee Farley. Jeanne Felix and Diane Madsen deserve a day at the spa for their tremendous work for the upcoming Piano Play Together in November. Patty Ladpli and Shu-Ching Chuang deserve a standing ovation for their tireless work for the honors festival. Finally, a huge thank you goes to our newsletter editor, Grant Billings, for creating a beautiful informative newsletter every month. I also want to thank my fellow officers for their wonderful support. Vice-President Gloria Chuang organized the very educational and fun workshop held in the fall. Secretary Joanna Grace provided timely and detailed minutes which came in very handy at many meetings. Treasurer June Zeeh has spent many hours organizing our financial affairs and providing wonderful financial advice. Our past president Shad Wenzlaff has not only been there for me as a consultant and consoler, but has also chaired a very successful piano competition festival during the summer. Please make sure to fill out the enclosed registration form so that you can be a part of a very exciting 2010-2011 year. Looking forward

Exploring Music Resources
|
The following is another great new product from Dr. Helen Marlais of the FJH Music Co. :
Succeeding at the Piano - A Method for Everyone
There are four books in each level.
Preparatory Level
Lesson & Technique Book w/CD...$8.95
Recital w/CD... $6.50
Theory & Activity... $6.50
Merry Christmas... $4.95
Level One
Lesson & Technique Book w/CD... $8.95
Recital w/CD... $6.50
Theory & Activity... $6.50
Merry Christmas....$4.95
The six basic techniques taught in the Preparatory Level are:
- Finger, hand, and arm position, body alignment + posture
- The feeling of arm weight
- Flexible wrist
- Two-note slurs
- Weight transfer from one finger to the next
- Rotation in the hand, wrist, and arm
Students learn to read by combining Middle C, intervallic, and multi-key approaches. They learn 2nd through 5th intervals, as well as C Position and "Almost" Middle C Positions.
Level One reviews the above concepts and introduces sharps and flats, tempo markings, half and whole steps, tonic and dominant, the natural sign, and dynamics. Students learn G Position, F-A-C-E in treble clef, Treble C Position, D Position, and Bass G Positions.
Accompaniment CDs for both levels are innovative as well as educational. Starting with Unit 3 in the Preparatory level, students play one piece in every unit accompanied by a real string quartet. Each piece has a single track in three parts: a slower practice speed, a short verbal instruction, and the performance speed.
This method is currently in stock. The Teacher's Guide for both levels with be available in the near future.

Piano Composition Festival (formerly known as Young Composers Festival)
Shad Wenzlaff
|

Although its name has changed, plans are underway for the 2010 MAPTA Piano Composition Festival with Dr. David Dies, Assistant Professor of Composition, Lawrence University (and UW-Madison School of Music graduate), as adjudicator. The deadline for composition submissions is Friday, July 30, 2010. This statewide competition is open to MAPTA and non-MAPTA teachers and their students (an additional fee is imposed for non-MAPTA teachers/students). Piano compositions will be judged by level. Students deemed "First
Place" and "Runner Up" in each category, by our guest judge, will be
invited to perform their compositions at a special Sunday recital this September. Watch for the details in the upcoming 2010-11 MAPTA directory. Prizes will be
awarded. Other noteworthy items; - All materials must be received by the event chairman no later than Friday, July 30, 2010.
- For the sake of leveling competitions, students with
duet/ensemble compositions will be asked to contact Shad at least 2
weeks prior to submission this year.
We are excited that Broadjam.com, a Madison-based online community dedicated to independent musicans and
music, has agreed to co-sponsor this year's festival. While they normally charge a significant fee for hosting online submissions, they have graciously waved their fee for MAPTA. Their sponsorship will make it easier for participants to submit their recordings and for the judge to access them. Thank you, Broadjam! PCF entry forms are available by clicking here or you can email Shad Wenzlaff, Festival Chairperson to have one mailed to you.

Include your name, the title of the piece and how many students per piece will be playing. No student names or registration fees are needed. This pre-registration will expire on July 1. This pre-registration will hope to assist the committee in allowing us to fill all ten pianos on each piece. Final registration with student names and registration fees will be due in September. Yes, you may still register students at this time without pre-registering, however by then, some pieces may already be full. Look for these registration forms in your August 2010 Nuances.
A letter announcing the details of the event can be downloaded here.
No partner? If you have a student who would be interested in playing a particular piece but has no partner, our committee will assist you in finding one from another studio. Just indicate this need in your correspondence with Patty.

This webcast provides concerned citizens the opportunity to participate in issue briefing activities that are part of NAMM's Washington D.C. advocacy efforts on behalf of music education. This year's briefing day will address U.S. education policy, the pending reauthorization of the U.S. education Act and advocacy for music education in federal legislative policy development. During the webcast, speakers will review current economic realities and the impact on small businesses.
The day-long event will feature prominent policy leaders and experts including Reg Leichty, education counsel at Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough; Sandra Ruppert, Director of the Arts Education Partnership, Gene Steuerle, economist and institute fellow of the Urban Institute; and Scott Pattison, executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers. Scholarship Requisite Article
Lana Robotewskyj

Helping out with Federation this year has reminded me how important it is to keep my connections to you all!! Obviously- I don't connect enough as some of you are surprised to see me, mistakenly thinking that I have dropped music- or that I will be dropping music as soon as I finish the Culinary Program at MATC. On the contrary!! This winter, I came across a unique opportunity and moved my studio out of home and into a retail space- incorporated, and built my web site during Christmas break. As I am in school with Culinary, I am also expanding my business, and plan to offer group lessons in addition to private. Please visit my website- I always appreciate feedback. The address is www.sunprairiepiano.com. It's exciting as I love my work.
In regards to group instruction- I have taken an on-line course for Kindermusik training and licensing. As my early Yamaha training built a strong foundation for working with young ones, I am finding some similarities between the Yamaha method and Kindermusik's method. I began my on-line training in January and am finishing up in a few weeks. My final requisite is to do a practicum and teach a class (ABC Music and ME) for a 4 week term. Kindermusik has provided all of the materials for me to hand out, free of charge to my guinea pigs. My only job was to find 5 participants that would volunteer their time. I sent an email to my client list, and invited them to forward to friends. That very same day, I had about 20 emails returned- offering their young child for the practice. I know this will be a great addition to my studio as there are young families everywhere looking towards music to enlighten their children! I believe group music instruction is the way to go when starting very young.
The on-line class itself consisted of weekly readings, contributing to forums and discussions on the Internet, listening to "webinares", and participating in discussions on Skype. I've found this experience to be very convenient and conducive to busy people like myself. I truly appreciate the format. With this training, I will incorporate Kindermusik classes into my studio offerings. Having taken this course, and expanding my repertoire in terms of teaching format, I am excited to enter the next phase of my musical life. On another note, my Culinary Program is awesome! I've already been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, received a foundation scholarship, and am entering a cold plate competition in the WI Restaurant Association Food Expo next month. I've also mastered the braise and rice pilaf! It's all been a real hoot and I love it. What can I say? Music and Food have always been my two passions! I'll make it back to the meetings as soon as things settle down- I am so excited for the upcoming piano-play-together! Sincerely- Lana Robotewskyj
