President's Message   by Debbie Yee

Welcome, ,

November, the month of Thanksgiving, has arrived! Since this issue of Nuances is devoted to publishing the new by-laws, I will make this letter short.

After 41 years of existence, MAPTA has many, many past and present individuals to thank for the longevity of the organization.

Please take time this month to thank any of the following members:

Past-Presidents: I now am very aware of the tremendous amount of free time these individuals have given to MAPTA in order for it to continue to thrive.

Other officers: The time the secretary , treasurer , vice-president and past-president devote to the maintenance of important records is invaluable to MAPTA.

Committee chairs: Throughout the years many members have devoted numerous hours to organize and direct valuable activities for MAPTA.

Businesses: Various businesses and individuals not associated with MAPTA have given valuable information and many times valuable resources to MAPTA.
MAPTA President Debbi Yee

We've got several great events happening this month, including a fantastic Fall Workshop featuring Dr. Andrew Hisey of St. Olaf College on Friday and our special general meeting to vote on the new by-laws on November 10th.

Looking forward...
Debbie Yee
MAPTA President

Fall Adult Music Social from Cheri Lewis

The Fall Adult Music Social will be held on Sunday, November 22nd at 7 p.m. Please encourage all of your adult students to participate in this opportunity.

The event is fairly informal and will help pianists at all levels to become more comfortable sharing their music with others. Pieces can be memorized or played with music. Adult students who would like to first learn more about the social are also welcome to attend without playing that evening. Those attending are requested to bring a small plate of cookies or other food to share.

Cheri Lewis will be hosting the event at her home: 1706 Wild Oak Circle, Madison 53713. Call Cheri at 608.222.5125 if you need directions.

PIANIST BARBARA LISTER-SINK PERFORMS AT UW from Jessica Johnson
Guest Artist is Renowned Expert on Injury Prevention

The Guest Artist Series at the School of Music presents pianist Barbara Lister-Sink on Friday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m. in Mills Hall.  Lister-Sink, Artist in Residence at Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is known both as a performer and global leader in injury preventive techniques for keyboard players.  During her visit to UW-Madison, she will lead two master classes-the first devoted to injury prevention and the second to piano performance.  These take place on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively, in Morphy Hall. The recital and both classes have free admission and are open to the public.

Barbara Lister-SinkLister-Sink was formerly keyboardist for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and has performed as soloist throughout Europe and North America, including collaborations with Guarneri String Quartet first violinist Arnold Steinhardt, former principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Doriot Anthony Dwyer and the late American mezzo soprano Jan DeGaetani. She has appeared at the New Hampshire, Skaneateles, Brevard and Chautauqua music festivals and has collaborated with notable composers such as Gyorgy Ligeti, Leon Kirchner, Vincent Persichetti and Witold Lutoslawski.  She was a member of the artist faculty of the Eastman School of Music from 1979 to 1986 and has taught at Duke University and the Brevard Music Center.

Lister-Sink's critically acclaimed video "Freeing the Caged Bird-Developing Well-Coordinated, Injury-Preventive Piano Technique" won the 2002 MTNA (Music Teachers National Association )-Frances Clark Keyboard Pedagogy National Award and was praised as "a monumental work" by pianist Vladimir Askenazy.  She has given numerous presentations on the subject for national and international music organizations and has written articles and reviews for leading music journals.

For her program in Mills Hall, Barbara Lister-Sink will perform four works:  "Variations sérieuses," Op. 54 by Mendelssohn; "Three Keyboard Pieces," Op. 11 by Schoenberg; "Preludes for Piano" by Gershwin; and "Gaspard de la Nuit" by Ravel.

The Guest Artist Series is supported by grants from the Vilas Trust and Anonymous Fund.  For more information about concerts at the School of Music, visit music.wisc.edu or call (608) 263-1900 to receive a season brochure.
Piano PlayTogether 2010  by Diane Madsen

The theme for the 2010 Piano PlayTogether is "Harmony for Humanity - Making a Better World Through Music".

Robert VandallThe ensemble concert will be held November 21, 2010 at the Oregon Performing Arts Center in Oregon, WI.  Even though this date is over a year away we already can report some exciting developments that have shaped up over the last several months.  Robert Vandall (pictured left) has been commissioned by MAPTA to compose a celebratory one piano/4-hands duet piece that will be used to open the concert.  This in itself is exciting, but the icing on the cake is the fact that Mr. Vandall will be the conductor for the event as well.  His commissioned composition will be performed for the first time at the concert and directed by the composer.

Another highlight is that MAPTA will be collaborating with Alfred Publications in presenting the ensemble event this time around.  By exclusively using Alfred publications for the concert program Alfred will provide Robert Vandall's travel, hotel, and meals along with promoting the concert via posters, email broadcasting, a video invitation, and PDF Flyers that all MAPTA teachers will be able to download for use in their studios.  This is just a sampling of what Alfred Publications will provide for this very special MAPTA concert.

The 2007 PPT had 192 students who participated.  This time around we'd like to have 250 students performing so start planning to have your studio included now.  If you would like to help with any aspect of the event please contact Jeanne Felix or Diane Madsen, co-directors
of the 2010 PPT.

Let's make this the best Piano PlayTogether yet!

MAFOP Update   from Renee Farley
Madison Area Friends of Piano (MAFOP) wishes to thank all the students and teachers that were involved in the Monster Concert on October 24, 2009.  This was held at Barnes & Noble East Towne Mall.  Lots of costumed players entertained shoppers that day.  Barnes & Noble generously donated a percentage of the day's profits to the American Family Children's Hospital. Thank you all for your participation!

The Key-Up-for-Kids Piano Playathon is Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Hilldale Shopping Center.  Piano teachers will receive a letter in early November with information for both teachers and students playing at the event. There will be two sites this year-The Atrium area and the Sentry area.  This is an opportunity for students to play piano and help children at the hospital.  The students get pledges for playing. Donations can also be made at the mall during the playathon.  Teachers sign up for a block of time for their students to play.  Directions on how to sign up for time are included in the letter.  Connie Jones will be doing the scheduling for this playathon.

This event benefits children hospitalized at the American Family Children's Hospital. The funds raised support the Child Life program.  No patient or insurance funds support this program.  The Child Life program offers children positive recreational activity not associated with medical treatment.  Many UW students volunteer their time in this area. Part of the funds raised this year will be used to help fund a music program for the children at the hospital.

This event is sponsored by Madison Area Friends of Piano.  MAPTA is a member of this organization.  MAFOP exists to promote playing the piano.  Its members include piano teachers, piano dealers and piano technicians.  This is the 18th playathon at Hilldale Mall sponsored by MAFOP.

Call or email Renee Farley, MAFOP President at 271-2626 with questions.
