Meet Lillian Longinow
Lillian Longinow

At 73 years young, Lillian, West Cook YMCA member since January 2008, just competed in the 6 County Senior Olympics in Park Ridge Illinois in July.

It is her belief that she never would have been able to do it without the support of her instructors at the Y. She credits Jerome Flasch with helping her reach her goal after she saw the ad for the Senior Olympics while taking cardio classes at the Berywn Park District.

Upon, determining that she wanted to be a part of the event, Lill started looking around for a pool in which she could train. After initially joining a different YMCA, Lill found herself joining the West Cook YMCA while taking advantage of the FREE Senior Fridays program.

Lill than decided to start taking group swim lessons and that's where she feels her training really started to pay off.

"I remember one day in particular, when I was really tired", Lill recalled. "I was swimming laps and I told Jerome that I just didn't think I could do it anymore. He said, I'll watch you for a little while. So I swam on and when I came to the end of a lap he was standing there encouraging me. As I turned to finish the last length, I heard him yell, "Kick! Kick! Kick!". And I was able to finish. When it came time to swim in the Senior Olympics, his words still echoed in my head and I was able to complete the 50m Backstroke and 50 meter Butterfly."

Since the Olympics, Lill has given thought to joining the Masters Swim Team at the Y. She has also continued to take her swim lessons, improving her skills everyday and proving her mantra that, "It's not age, it's attitude."

We promote and hope that all who use the YMCA abide by our four character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Unfortunately, in these difficult economic times, certain individuals seem more determined than ever to steal

Always keep valuables on you or secure in a locker when visiting the YMCA and consider not bringing valuables with you into the building if possible. We want all of our members to feel safe and secure while pursuing a healthy lifestyle. If you see suspicious activity, please report it to the member services desk.

Thank you for being a valuable part of our YMCA.

My office is located right next to the Guest Services desk.  There's a half door where you can see me looking out.  Please stop by and say hello, I am really looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can.  And I'd love to hear your connection with the YMCA and I'd be happy to share mine with you as well.

Thank you for continuing to be a part of our YMCA, it's because of your participation and support we are able to serve the community and build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.  Thank you for being an asset to your community.

I'd love for you to stop by and say hi, but if you'd like to email me I can be reached at bvergere@westcookymca.org.
