Big Sister Leta Reale and Little Sister Katherine
Big Sister Leta Reale and Little Sister Katherine have been matched since Se ptember of 2006. Since being matched, they have done a variety of activities together such as watching movies, going to the beach, attending the Festival of Lights and making Christmas cards. Within 6 months of being matched, Big Sister Leta took Katherine to see the play, "Annie." Katherine was so thrilled that she auditioned for a part in a play at her school; with Big Sister Leta's encouragement and support Katherine got the part! Little Sister Katherine has been hooked on theater ever since and has been involved in drama classes, drama club, as well as with helping out behind the scenes in plays at her middle and high school.
As Little Sister Katherine grew older, their activities together changed. Now, this pair goes out to eat, shopping, and they exercise together. Big Sister Leta taught Katherine how to bake and cook basic meals for her and her father. She recommended her to volunteer at a local hospital to gain experience in a hospital setting and earn hours for the Bright Futures Scholarship. Since attending high school, Big Sister Leta has encouraged her to start thinking about college, scholarships, and career paths. Katherine would like to major in nutrition so that she can pursue a career path as a Registered Dietician.
When asked what the important ingredients are to making a match successful and long-lasting, Little Sister Katherine said, "It helps to have similar interests, and to have good communication." Katherine has grown closer to her Big Sister over the years and said, "I consider her to be one of the few people, whom I can trust!" She also added that she especially admires her "open-mindedness," because she can say what's on her mind and never has to worry about being criticized or judged!
Big Sister Leta admires her Little Sister's flexibility and willingness to adapt, which has helped her to go far in life. When asked how being a Big Sister has impacted Leta, she said, "Watching my Little Sister grow and mature has been especially rewarding... and I have personally seen a difference in Katherine's life by having introduced her to the theater, and having continuously reminded Katherine about the importance of education and going on to college." Big Sister Leta has acknowledged that this is the path Katherine has chosen, and this makes her very proud.
Little Sister Katherine, summed things up about their match by stating, "Leta has taught me that I can do anything I want, if I put my mind to it!"
Share your match moments with your Match Manager. You never know, your story could inspire others just like Leta and Katherine.

Graduating Littles College Night
On Tuesday, May 8, we had an wonderful opportunity for some of our just recently graduated and soon to be graduating Little Brothers and Sisters to attend an evening with advisors from St. Petersburg College at the Allstate Center. Littles, parents/guardians and Bigs attended, as well as BBBS staff. It was a great opportunity to obtain very useful information for our Littles who are interested in continuing their education, learning about what scholarships, financial aid and grants are available to them.
Keller Williams Red Day at Largo Central Park
On Thursday May 10th, Largo Central Park was filled with many smiling Littles and Bigs. This was the third annual event sponsored by Keller Williams. The matches enjoyed dinner together and they were treated to a magic show by the clowns, who also made balloon animals. Bouncy houses, face painting, cupcake decorating and a baseball game also brought great fun for our matches. Click on the picture to the right to view photos from the event.
SPC Allstate Center Career Event On Thursday May 24th, Bigs and Littles had the opportunity to meet with the K-9 Officers from the Pinellas Park Police Department at the Saint Petersburg College Allstate Center. 13 matches attended the event, where they were treated to dinner and a K-9 Demonstration. Littles from Middle School and High School were invited for demonstrations of the driving pad, firing range, and an engaging activity with the obstacle courses. The Allstate Center offers academic degrees as well as many professional training certificates in areas such as crime scene technology and Criminal Justice, which we hope that the Littles will consider as a possibility to further their education. Make BBBS Your Charity of Choice!
Are you involved with an organization who is planning an event or fundraiser? Do you have, or know of a business who would like to give back to the community? Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus Counties is looking for local organizations to participate in our Charity of Choice program!
A couple of ideas on how to become a Charity of Choice partner would be to have a special day at your place of business where a % of the proceeds benefit our agency, or to hold a special event for a group, where part of the the entry fees or food and beverage sales benefit our local children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters.
To participate, all event planning would be the sole responsibility of the organization that chooses us as their Charity of Choice. Due to a very limited staff, our agency cannot participate in actual event planning, but could potentially send a representative on the day of the event. To help promote the event, our agency would be happy to communicate details of your event to our constituents through email newsletters and social media, as appropriate.
If you have a Charity of Choice idea, please contact Christine Battista, Marketing & Communications Coordinator: 727-518-8860 ext 231, or ChristineB@bbbspc.org

| Frequently Asked Question |
|
What should I do if I know someone who is interested in getting involved with your program as a Big Brother? Do you still have the need for male mentors?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County's largest need is for male mentors! In fact, we are launching the "100 Men in 100 Days" campaign this summer in an effort to recruit more male volunteers. The campaign kicks off on June 1st so now would be a perfect time to refer a male friend, relative, significant other, or co-worker who would be an excellent Big Brother! All you would need to do is pass along his name and contact information to Edwin Rodriguez at EdwinR@bbbspc.org, 727-518-8860 x223 or Christa Setzer at ChristaS@bbbspc.org, 727-518-8860 x227 and we will be sure to reach out to them to discuss the next steps in becoming a Big Brother!
