MATCH MOMENTSSB BB Jeff Riley & LB Brenyen

Jeff Riley & Brenyen

A Tech Data workplace Big at High Point Elementary

Coming from a home with all girls, Little Brother Brenyen sought to have the friendship of a male figure in his life. Brenyen comes from a single-parent home, living with his mother and sister. He wanted a Big Brother so badly and requested one who could play sports with him, since he was very athletic himself. He was extremely shy at his match interview and clearly needed an outgoing Big who could bring him out of his shell.

In September of 2009, this Little Brother found his match. Big Brother Jeff Riley is an employee of Tech Data, one of Big Brothers Big Sisters workplace partners. Each week, Jeff visits his Little Brother at High Point Elementary School. This Big Brother is everything Brenyen could have hoped for - caring, consistent, confident, and most importantly, sporty. Jeff has become a positive force in his Little's life and has definitely brought him out of his shell and into his true self. At almost every match outing, these two play basketball while Jeff works at teaching good manners at the same time.

As a result of Jeff's constant and caring relationship, Brenyen's attitude has improved tremendously and he no longer acts out in class. He is always on his best behavior when he knows that his Big is coming to visit him at school. This Big Brother serves as a great role model for this young man, showing him the value of making positive choices, and being there for his family.

Corporate Partner Spotlight

BBBSPC would like to recognize some of our wonderful corporate partners and their recent contributions to our agency!

The Tampa Bay Rays recently asked matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County and of Tampa Bay to compete in the design of their holiday card! Over 30 matches submitted artwork from Pinellas County alone! The winners will be announced at the end of this month.

Wells Fargo Advisors recently assisted Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County in being awarded a $10,000 grant!

Kids Say the Darndest Things

When interviewer asked Zy'kea, 8, if there is anything else she would like to add to the interview, she said that she would like her mentor to help her make friends, and to make her a superstar.

When interviewer asked Ayana, 10, what her three wishes would be if she could have anything, she said, "A puppy, all the candy in the world, and my own dentist so I won't get cavities from the candy."

Big Brothers Big Sisters Information & Events

Our agency is very excited to announce that we have surpassed the number of children we served last year!  The year is not over yet though and we still have important goals to reach.  We know that you share our vision to help all children achieve success in life, so we would like to share our needs in hopes that you can assist us in reaching our 2 main goals:

  1. Making more matches between Bigs and Littles: this entails increasing the number of volunteer inquiries via recruitment and marketing.  More than 500 children are hoping to be matched with a Big Brother, Big Sister,or Big Couple in Pinellas, Citrus and Hernando counties.  About 200 of these children are ready and waiting to be matched with a Big.
  2. Increasing revenue: via corporate support, sponsorships, individual gifts and participation in special events.  The average cost of making a new match is approximately $1,200, including all necessary background screenings, interviews and professional support throughout the first year of the match.  Revenue is crucial to making new matches and serving more of the children who are waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister.

There are many ways that you, as a Big, can help:

  1. For the holiday season, please consider participating in our online campaign and clothing drive (details below).
  2. We have opportunities for several office volunteer positions.
  3. Please visit our online database to see if your employer has a matching program. If they do not, please reach out to your Human Resources department or business owner to inquire about starting one. Big Brothers Big Sisters can work with your organization to set up a matching program, or direct payroll deductions for employees who would like to show support in smaller increments.
There are many ways to help Big Brothers Big Sisters reach more children facing adversity in our community - Start Something today!

Give the Gift of a Lifetime

As a Big, you know best what kind of impact you have.  More than 500 children are hoping to be matched with a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple in Pinellas, Citrus and Hernando counties.  With background screenings, trainings, interviews and professional support for the first year, it costs nearly $1,200 to make and support one new match.  Please help other children who are waiting for the same wonderful experience by giving the gift of a "BIG".  You know that it will be a gift that will last a lifetime.

Set up a simple online account and direct friends and family by email to give gifts through our secure website.  It is a fast way to accept gifts from your supporters over the holidays; gifts that you know will be put to good use at BBBS!  Please sign up today at: https://bbbspc.myetap.org/fundraiser/giveabig/

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I allowed to give my Little a gift for a birthday or for the holidays?

YES.  While our volunteers are under no obligation whatsoever to bring gifts or other tangible items to match meetings, it is permitted.  Match Managers ask that these be given to the Littles at the end of the meeting, and ask the Little to put away promptly so as not to distract other students.

Am I allowed to communicate with my Little over the holiday breaks?

YES. Matches can talk on the phone or e-mail over holiday breaks, the summer break, or between match meetings. This is the only contact permitted outside of match meetings.
