Stand Up To Stop Suicide
Ed Byrne at Stand Up to Stop Sucide
Providing stellar support to our recent 'Stand Up To Stop Suicide' event, comedians David Baddiel and Stephen Merchant turned up to create a truly spectacular night with Ed Byrne, Simon Amstell, Hattie Hayridge, Richard Herring, Matthew Holness, Robin Ince, Daniel Kitson, Phil Nichol and Paul Sinha.

With such a great response, CALM are now in talks to turn this one-off showcase into a annual event, with Merseyside being tipped as the show's next location.  Keep tuned (rumour has it this will be in November).

For those of you who missed out, you can view footage from the night via Podcast or You Tube or via the Stand Up To Stop Suicide myspace page

500:100

Part of our 500:100 project, CALM has brought together over 60 companies to donate £100 each in the fight against young suicide, which combined with the success of Stand Up Against Suicide has brought the total to £11,000.  A fifth of the way there for the Campaign.

Of course we're always looking onwards and upwards as CALM begins to spread nationwide, so we're beginning to look towards more companies for the appeal.  The returns for sponsoring a charity like CALM are many, and we're currently in talks to work out a high profile programme of publicity and promotion for businesses involved with the charity.

Once again Ogilvy have stepped into the breach here and have created logos to support this campaign, so please get in touch with Jessica at Ogilvy to get these placed on your promotional materials.  Jessica.Finning@ogilvy.com.  We'll be publishing a roll of honour listing all the companies that sign up for this Appeal as soon as we hit the first 100.

At present the only way a business can donate is via cheque (CAF/Just Giving sites are individual donations only), but don't worry, we're working on that too...

We've applied to Comic Relief for a grant to match this Appeal - and have just heard that we have been shortlisted.  We will hear finally later this year.
StrongNotSilent Music

CALM logo

CALM have always had a strong link to music (Cream, 3 Beat Records, ITC, to name a few); so it's only logical that we begin getting in on the act ourselves.  That's why we're about to launch www.strongnotsilentmusic.com, a new download store where you can buy tracks exclusive to the website, with 100% of the cash you put in being pumped straight back into the Campaign.

Nick Tate and Anstey have been hard at work gathering A-list DJ's, producers, and musicians to make this a really special venture.  The countdown continues to launch...  'Til then you'll just have to wait and see who we've got in-store for you...  We can guarantee it'll be worth the wait!

Research

Combating young suicide is the prime reason for CALM's existence, and we put every effort in supporting research into this often complex subject.  Working alongside Ogilvy we will be developing a White Paper that does just that, focusing on the reasons behind young male suicide.

Information and awareness is vital if we are to find a solution to this devastating problem, and it is from this research brief that the media will be approached to give further exposure to CALM and its primary purpose.  janepowell@thecalmzone.net
Merseyside CALMzone

Striding into its 8th year, the Merseyside CALMzone is going from strength to strength.  Recently hosting a much needed chill-out tent at the Knowsley Hall Music Festival, CALM provided refuge for festival goers from a white hot (if a bit muddy) main stage, featuring artists tearing up the bill such as the legendary The Who, The Zutons, and Keane.

The promotional push doesn't stop there though, and whilst the summer may be a bit late in appearing, you can guarantee CALM's presence at more local festivals, including the always storming Creamfields in August, and later at November's Southport Weekender.  No doubt we'll see you there.

Looking further forward, we're now starting to gear up for the start of the new university term in September, arming ourselves with give-aways, freebies and a whole host of other paraphernalia to educate the Merseyside student population.

The airwaves are also soon to be commandeered for the Campaign in the form of brand new on-air and on-line exposure via local Emap station 96.7 Radio City.  This should be a great way for the Campaign to reach a whole new audience, so keep you ears firmly peeled for forthcoming updates!

Raising Funds
Remembering Friends & Family

If you're searching for a charity to raise funds for, then we have sponsorship forms, and setting up your own fundraising page is a breeze with CALMs JustGiving.com/calm

In May around 70 people ran in the BUPA 10K Run in Manchester, mostly friends and family of James Walsh and other local lads.  With a reception afterwards put together by Maggie Day.   Each of the Tshirts carried the name of the person the runner was running in memory of.

We've also had people running the British 10K in London, climbing mountains and doing the Iron Man challenge.  Thank you to everyone, and well done!

We've had lots of enquiries about running the London Marathon.  We can buy 1 place in 2 years time... your best chance of running for CALM is to apply directly for a place, and then nominate CALM as your charity.

Thank you

The comedy night wouldn't have happened without the outstanding endeavors of the following people:

Ogilvy who produced the adverts, press packs and programmes; simply beautiful!

Metro Newspapers who provided sponsorship for the event.

TMW who produced the tireless DM operation and the great myspace page.

Anstey, whose idea it was, Tiernan Douieb and the whole Comedy Team and volunteers who made it happen.

We are also indebted to Dick Carruthers, Neil Evely, Tom Woodcraft, Henry Stein and Neil Evely for the Podcasts;Swan Turton, PPR Publicity, Clapham Grand, JCDecaux & Amazon PR; and for outstanding efforts on other stuff, thanks to: Nick Tate, Christopher Dickson and Indra Morris

We look forward to working with Top Man, Catapault Digital and all the other companies - and invididuals - who've offered help.

Helpline Update

phone

When CALM's helpline went into suspension two grants were also suspended - one for £40k from Dept of Health, the other a £10k grant from the Mental Health Helpline Partnership.

We've met with Dept of Health and are discussing having a very reduced helpline - operating maybe 1 or 2 days a week, or perhaps 2 hours per day.  Hopefully this should help unfreeze both grants.  Watch this space!

The comedy night, Metro, and 2 sponsored 10K runs in Manchester and London (with near on 70 runners in Manchester) brought in £17,000 to CALM last month.  Which is just brilliant.

Hyndburn CALMzone
Loudly buzzing in the pipeline is the launch of Hyndburn CALMzone in Lancashire.  Being overseen by Paul Heald.  We hope that the programme can expand into Burnley and Pendle, Big Lottery Grants permitting.

Wasted Youth

wasted youth

CALM met with Daniel Fulvio, Deputy News Editor of Heat Magazine, and some of the guys involved in 'Wasted Youth', last weekend.  They're aiming to host a gig in Camden this Autumn and want to highlight the problem of suicide among young people.  Given the similarities between ourselves it makes sense for us to join and work together.  So, you see and hear more about Wasted Youth and from Dan in the near future.
