 | Intel ISEF 2011 Public Day |
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world's largest international pre-college science competition and it is being held at Los Angeles Conversion Center from May 8 to 13.
Over 1,500 high school students from 65 countries display and present their independent research at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Intel ISEF Finalists will be available from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 12 to discuss their projects with visitors who share an enthusiasm for science research.
If you are an aspiring young scientist or interested in participating in prestigious science competitions, this is a great opportunity to learn how high school research projects are being conducted.

2011 Excellent in Mathematics Award Ceremony and Ice Cream Social
|
Avid Academy will hold its 5th annual Excellence in Mathematics Award Ceremony to honor Orange County's exceptionally talented students. An ice cream social will take place immediately after.

Location: DeNault Auditorium, Concordia University, Irvine

Registration Now Open for Avid Academy Science Programs
|
To meet increased demand for Math and Science education, Avid Academy has added the following programs this summer.
CI - Introductory Java Programming (Grades 7 - 10; June 27 - July 9, 5:30 - 8:30 PM): Students will learn how to write, run, and debug Java programs, specific language syntax, and commonly used programming features with a focus on developing software algorithms. The objective is to enable students in writing short programs commonly used in USA Computing Olympiad and laboratory scientific research data processing.
DI - Introductory Science Fair Research (Grades 6 - 8; June 27 - July 9, 1:30 - 4:30 PM): Students will work on a Science Fair Research Project and enter the 2012 Orange County Science Fair Junior Division Competition. Students will learn scientific experimentations and research skills in physics, mathematics, Alternative Energy, and Bioinformatics. Students will also be guided through the selection of a science fair research topic and use the rest of the summer to complete the project on their own pace. Continued mentoring will be provided during weekly office hours.
DII - Intermediate Science Fair Research (Grades 9 - 10; June 27 - July 9, 1:30 - 4:30 PM): Students will work on a Science Fair Research Project and enter the 2012 Orange County Science Fair Senior Division Competition. Interest students should schedule a personal interview with Dr.Li to discuss qualifications for being admitted into the program. The interview time is May 16 - 19. Registration for following programs will start in June.
From August 22 - September 2:
- Introductory Biology Olympiad: for students who are interested in the USA Biology Olympiad as well as the SAT Biology and AP Biology exams.
- Introductory Physics Olympiad: for students who are interested in the USA Physics Olympiad as well as the AP Physics exam.
- Intermediate Computing Olympiad: for students who are interested in the USA Computing Olympiad.
From June 11 - September 2 on Saturdays, 1:30 - 4:30 PM
- AIME Seminars: We will host weekly AIME seminars on Saturdays for students who qualified for AIME in 2011 and would like to improve their AIME scores to qualify for USAJMO and USAMO in 2012.

 | 2011 Math Olympiad Summer Camp Current Student Registration Deadline Approaches |
The 2011 Orange County Math Olympiad Summer Camp will be held from July 11 to August 5. The following programs will be available. Click on the session title to access the online registration page.
- Session A-I: July 11 - 22, M - F, 8:30 - 11:30 AM for students in grades 4 and 5. This introductory camp is intended for students currently in Avid F110 as well as new students who will be entering 4th or 5th grade in Fall 2011.
- Session B-I: July 25 - August 5, M - F, 8:30 - 11:30 AM for students in grades 5 and 6. This advanced elementary school summer camp is intended for students currently in Avid F120 or F130 as well as new students who will be entering 6th grade in Fall 2011.
- Session A-II: July 11 - 22, M - F, 12:30 - 3:30 PM for students in grades 7 and 8. This introductory middle school camp is indented for students currently in Avid E210 as well as new students who will be studying Algebra in Fall 2011.
- Session B-II: July 25 - August 5, M - F, 12:30 - 3:30 PM for advanced middle school students. This intensive MATHCOUNTS boot camp is for students currently in Avid E220 or new students who will study geometry in Fall 2011.
- Session A-III: July 11 - 22, M - F, 5:30 - 8:30 PM for students in grades 9 and 10. This introductory AMC 10 prep camp is designed to give students an early start in AMC 10 and Algebra II preparation. It is for students currently in Avid E230 or new students who will study Algebra II in Fall 2011.
- Session B-III: July 25- August 5, M - F, 5:30 - 8:30 PM. Jump Start AMC 12 and Pre-Calculus. This intensive camp is designed for students who are currently in Avid G210 or new students who will study Pre-Calculus in Fall 2011.

| Three Southern California Students Made 2011 U.S. Physics Team | |
AAPT has released the roster of the 2011 U.S. Physics Team. Benjamin Li, a junior from Arcadia High School, Ryan Yoo, a home schooler, and Jonathan Li, a senior from St. Margaret's Episcopal School were among the 20 team members. The team will attend an intensive training camp from May 20 - 30 at University of Maryland and a traveling team of five students will be selected to represent United States to compete at International Physics Olympiad in July.

 | 2011 USAMO and USAJMO Winners and Honorable Mentions Announced |
David Yang received a perfect score and is among one of the 12 winners at the 2011 USAMO competition. He will attend the Math Olympiad Summer Program and train for the USA IMO team. Another Avid alumni Dai Yang received honorable mention for placing in the top 12 - 24. Both Daivd and Dai attends Philips Exeter Academy, a prestigious boarding school in New Hampshire. The second annual Orange County All-Girls Math Tournament was held on Saturday, April 30 by Orange County Math Circle. Several Avid students were among the winners:
