About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.

Dear friends,

What a great way to kick off the New Year! Our 2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage was another smashing success with 126 enthusiastic participants from over 30 schools from Southern California.
I am most grateful to Mr. David Boyle and his staff at St. Margaret's for providing the facility and arranging logistics to sponsor our event. I also appreciate all the OCMC volunteers who took part in bringing Math Circle experience to other students despite their own demanding workload during the finals weeks.

Our next event is the 2011 All-Girls Math Tournament in April which Mrs. Joanne Williams, the Assistant Principal of St. Anne School, has once again graciously agreed to host. OCMC will be initiating a fund-raiser to raise money so we can give a FREE t-shirt to each participant. We would appreciate your support in the coming months.

While facing significant budget cuts in California, many schools are reducing extra-curricular programs. OCMC has become a destination for many students whose schools were not able to offer a math club. We applauded people like Mr. Boyle and Mrs. Williams and students like OCMC volunteers who support our grassroots effort joining national initiatives to improve STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education, the key to future American innovation and economic competitiveness.

The work of OCMC volunteers is getting recognized by the National Association of Math Circles. We have been invited to their annual meeting to present our experiences and learn from other math circle organizers in the nation. Alex Zivkovic and I will attend the Conference in Houston, TX in March to bring fresh ideas from other math circles back home to continually build OCMC. We will keep you posted on our work.

Lastly, good luck to all of you who are participating in MATHCOUNTS and AMC 10/12 competitions in February!

Happy Chinese New Year!

OCMC Student Council Meeting
There will be no Student Council meeting this month. The next meeting is on Sunday, March 6. Please contact Johnny at jonathan.li@smes.org if you are interested in attending.
Please Support OCMC

We need your help! OCMC is a non-profit organization that provides free events to all and we would like to keep it that way.  However, running events as well as finding venues for meetings do cost money.  If you would like to support our program, donations will be graciously accepted. Please write the check payable to Orange County Math Circle and mail it to OCMC, PO Box 1907, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92693. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Johnny at jonathan.li@smes.org. Any amount is appreciated!

2011 AMC 10 and 12 Competition
Tuesday, February 8, 2011, Irvine Chinese School, CA

The 2011 American Mathematics Competition Season will kick off on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at exam sites around the world. Approximately 250,000 students in total will take this exam. Two versions of the exam, test A and B, will be given. The AMC 10/12A will be administered on Tuesday, February 8 and the AMC 10/12B on Wednesday, February 23. The two versions are for students who might have a conflict and will be about the same level of difficulty. Students are allowed to take both exams and use the better score for advancing to the next round - the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME).

Students who take AMC 10 and score at least 120 or within the top 2.5% will qualify to take the AIME. Students who take AMC 12 and score at least 100 or within the top 5% will also qualify to take AIME. The combined AMC and AIME scores will determine qualification for the third round - United States Junior Math Olympiad (USAJMO) or United States Math Olympiad (USAMO). The top 230-240 students who take AMC 10 and AIME will qualify for USAJMO and the top 260-270 students who take AMC 12 and AIME will qualify for USAMO.

New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage a Smashing Success!
Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, St. Margaret's Episcopal School, CA

More than 120 students participated in the 2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage held at St. Margaret's Episcopal School on January 16, 2011. Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins SET/CTY gave a talk regarding high school planning for gifted middle school students.

The competition this year was very intense.  Scores were just a few points apart and many had to go to tie-breakers in order to determine the top students. Rancho San Juaquin Middle School won the team competition and Benjamin Chen, a 6th grader, won the individual countdown round again, repeating his outstanding performance last year. Michelle Chen, a 7th grader from Venado Middle School was the overall Champion of the individual competition. In the Fermat Division for students in grade 6 or lower, Turtle Rock Elementary School placed first as a team and Jason Ye, a 6th grader from Foothill Ranch Elementary School, won the individual competition.

Orange County Math Circle has been invited to make a presentation at the 2011 Circle on the Road Conference, the annual meeting of the National Association of Math Circles.  The meeting will be held on the campus of the University of Houston in Texas from March 18 to 20.  OCMC was asked to share how our student volunteers manage to organize and run Orange County Math Circle. Alex Zivkovic and Johnny Li will represent OCMC at the conference to meet other math circle organizers from around the nation. We are deeply honored for the opportunity and sincerely thank the National Association of Math Circles and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) for their generosity for sponsoring our trips.
