About OC Math Circle
The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown. Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history. |

Dear Friends,
As we concluded another successful Thanksgiving Tournament, I am reminded how privileged we are to be part of the Orange County Math Circle (OCMC). While other math circles in the nation are primarily organized by professors, OCMC is completely run by students. It has been a remarkable year at OCMC. We spearheaded the first-ever All-Girls Math Tournament at St. Anne School, hosted the Summer Math Tournament at Irvine Chinese School, offered the AMC practices taught by aspiring mathematicians, became a member of the National Association of Math Circles, won grant from the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and inaugurated the Santa Ana Math Club with 83 enrolled students and growing.
We are now gearing up to expand our 2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage, a special event jointly sponsored by Dr. Michelle Muratori of the Study of Exceptional Talent (SET) at Johns Hopkins University. Thanks to generous support from Mr. David Boyle-- the Associate Headmaster and Upper School Principal of St. Margaret's Episcopal School, this event will be held on my beloved campus in San Juan Capistrano.
All of these undertakings would not have been accomplished without help from you-- volunteers, teachers, parents, and supporters. I am amazed by how many of you have stepped forward from all corners to donate your valuable time, offer your precious resources and share your special talents. In four years since its founding, OCMC has evolved into a unique math community for aspiring mathematicians regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. I sincerely hope your OCMC experience is a rewarding one and our collective efforts are making a positive difference in serving the greater society.
Thanks again for your support. We look forward to an exciting year of 2011! Happy Holidays! Johnny Li St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011

OCMC Student Council Meeting 2:30 - 3:30 pm, December 19, 2010
The Orange County Math Circle Student Council will meet on Sunday, December 19, 2010 from 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM at LA-122, Concordia University, Irvine. The agenda of this meeting is to organize the 2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage. We will also discuss fundraising initiatives for next year. Please brainstorm some ideas and put on your thinking cap so you can contribute. The meeting is mandatory for Student Council members and the attendance will be taken. If you have any questions, please contact Johnny at joli@smes.org. |
MATHCOUNTS Master Classes 12 noon - 2:30 pm, Sunday, December 19, 2010 We will host two MATHCOUNTS classes on December 19 focusing on algebra techniques. The Beginner level class, geared toward 6th graders, will work on a chapter-level exam while the Advanced class, geared towards 7th and 8th graders, will work on a state-level exam. Several past Orange County MATHCOUNTS Champions (Alex, 2006; Johnny, 2007; Brian, 2009, and Andrew 2009) will be available to help aspring mathematicians in their preparation for the chapter competitions in February. To register for the event, please use the online reservation page: OC Math Circle MATHCOUNTS Practice Online Registration. Early registration is strongly encouraged. |
2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage 1-5pm, Sunday, January 16, 2011
The OCMC will be hosting the 2011 New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage for all students in grades 6-8 on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Our wholehearted appreciation goes to Mr. David Boyle, the Associate Headmaster and Upper School Principal of St. Margaret's Episcopal School, who has graciously offered their campus facility to OCMC for this event.
We also would like to acknowledge our special thank-you to Dr. Michelle Muratori, Senior Counselor of The Study of Exceptional Talent (SET) of Johns Hopkins University, for co-sponsoring the event and accepting our invitation to be a guest speaker for the event. While a separate SET gathering will take place concurrently at St. Margaret's, OCMC has extended our event invitations to SET members who are eligible. So, we are anticipating a very exciting Scrimmage this year.
Many past participants were mesmerized about their experience from New Year Invitational. The simulated MATHCOUNTS event offers a warm up opportunity in a much relaxed and informal setting for individual students and school teams who will participate in the 2011 Orange County MATHCOUNTS Chapter competition in February. Due to space limitation, we can only accept 60 students per grade based on a first-come, first-served basis.
Who: Grades 6 - 8
Date: Sunday, January 16, 2011
Time: 1:00 - 5:00 PM
Location: St. Margaret's Episcopal School
31641 La Novia, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
To register or learn more about the tournament, please visit the events page on the OCMC website: 2011 OCMC New Year Invitational and MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage. Please scroll toward the end of the page to register online. Both individuals and teams will be accepted. Early registrations are strongly encouraged. |
2010 Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday, November 27, 2010 The Orange County Math Circle's second annual Thanksgiving Tournament took place this year just two days after Thanksgiving. With 87 students from grades 3 through 6 participating this year, there was much excitement and enthusiasm in the air as the tournament began early Saturday morning. Leaning away from dull homework drills, these problems gave many of the students a fresh experience in problem solving with a group of students who all love math. Instead of strictly following school standards, students had the chance to be more creative in trying to figure out solutions to math problems that require a good understanding of school-taught concepts. We'd like to acknowledge our appreciation to Tournament Director-- Alex Zivkovic for his hard work and dedication to make the event successful. We also had a great showing of student volunteers who filled in any needed work from creating problem sets, designing flier, making copies, to proctoring, grading, and leading games.

More Volunteers Needed for Growing Santa Ana Math Club
Saturday, November 20, 2010
Our Santa Ana Math Club had another fabulous day on November 20! We currently have 83 students enrolled, 74 of which came to the second session, on another cold, rainy day! Alex and Sean taught 30 sixth and seventh graders, while Jennifer, Vincent and Johnny taught 44 fourth and fifth graders. "The kids are enthusiastic, and really excited about learning from high school kids. They really look up to all of you, and admire you as role models", commented Mrs. Nita Walker, K-5 Math/Science Specialist of Santa Ana Unified School District. The event photos can be found in Santa Ana Math Club Session Two Photo Album.
Due to increased enrollment, we plan to add a third class for students in grade 4 and 5. We are looking for more student volunteers who will be interested in teaching this class. Please contact Johnny at joli@smes.org for more information. |
