About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.
Dear Friends,

Our new school year has begun with a fantasitc start, shining with promise of a bright future ahead.  The Santa Ana Math Club has already started with over 60 students in its first session.  We also completed two AMC 8 practice sessions with 45 students per session.  Last week, we hosted our first annual Harvard-MIT Online Math Tournament and this weekend, we are sending another team to participate in the CalTech-Harvey Mudd Math Tournament.  As we dive into various math competitions, we would like to wish everyone good luck.

Sincerely,

Andrew Ma

Santa Ana Math Club a Brilliant Success
Saturday, October 23, 2010

On October 23, 2010, the Orange County Math Circle launched the Santa Ana Math Club at Lathrop Intermediate School. Alex Zivkovic, Elisa Young, Staphany Hou, Sean Liu, and Johnny Li offered problem solving instruction and assistance to over 60 Santa Ana students from grades 4 through 7. Many eager students were ready to learn and engage in problem solving techniques taught by the OCMC student volunteers. At the end of the day the students participating in the Santa Ana Math Club enjoyed the program immensely, some claiming it was "so fun that time flies by too fast"! The student teachers also had a great time "work[ing] with such motivated students" and "see[ing] their strive to learn"! Overall, the launch was a great success, and the OCMC hopes to build continuously upon this solid foundation.  Please visit the event album to learn more.

If you are interested in serving as a member of the community service teams for the Santa Ana Math Club project, please contact Johnny at joli@smes.org.  Community service hours are available for participation.
OCMC Team A Scores Perfect on the Harvard-MIT Team Round Competition
Saturday, November 7, 2010

Orange County Math Circle hosted the First Annual Harvard-MIT Online Math Tournament. Several high school students from various high schools partook in individual and team rounds, and teams organized by the OCMC did exceptionally well. The OCMC Team A, consisting of Johnny Li, Alex Ramirez, Simon Wu, Kevin Yin, Sean Kanne, and Raku Watari received a perfect score on the Team Round and did exceptionally well on the massive eighty-minute Guts Round. Individual Kevin Yin (San Marino HS)received a 38 on the Theme Round, and in a tie for second were individuals Kevin Zhang (Harvard-Westlake) and Andrew Ma (University High) with 23. Overall, the event was a large success.  Speical thanks go to Prof. Kent Merryfield, Coach of the Southern California American Regions Math League (ARML) team, who offered help with the event.  Some photos of the event can be found in Harvard-MIT Online Math Tournament Album.
AMC 8 Practice Sessions Helped Over 130 Students
Sunday, November 7, 2010

Last Sunday, OCMC volunters Johnny Li, Heesoo Kim, David Qiao and Andrew Ma hosted and led the third session of AMC 8 practice and lecture. We had a great attendance of around forty-five students, and the session was both fun and informative. With the upcoming national competition season, it is vital for the younger students to be able to participate in an environment similar to that of the test as well as receive assistance with the problems.

The AMC 8 practice sessions have provided practice opportunities to over 130 students in three months.  The AMC 8 exam will be held on November 16 nationwide and we wish all participants good luck on their exam.
