Welcome to The Avid Learner, an online newsletter of Avid Academy for Gifted Youth.
2010 Orange County Math Olympiad Summer Camp Registration Continues
Avid Academy will host the fifth annual Math Olympiad Summer Camp for students in grades 4 - 11 from July 5 to July 16 and July 19 to July 30 at Concordia University, Irvine, CA.  The camp offers the following training sessions:
  • A-I - Introductory Problem Solving (grades 4 - 5)
  • B-I - Advanced Problem Solving and Jump Start Pre-Algebra (grades 5 - 6)
  • A-II - Jump Start Algebra and Middle School Math Competitions (grades 7 - 8)
  • B-II - Jump Start Geometry and MATHCOUNTS (grades 7 - 8)
  • A-III - Jump Start Algebra II and AMC 10 (grades 8 - 11)
  • B-III - Jump Start Pre-Calculus and AMC12 (grades 9 - 11)
We accept approximately 25 students for each session.  The early registration deadline has passed.  Due to popular demands, sessions AI and BI at Irvine Camp site are now full.  If you are interested in other sessions, please register immediately to secure your spot.  For more information or to download registration forms, please visit 2010 Orange County Math Olympiad Summer Camp.
Avid Academy Opens Two New Summer Camp Sessions in Fullerton
To better serve students in Orange County, Avid Academy will offer two additional summer camp sessions in Fullerton: 
Camp Location:
4128 W. Commonwealth Ave, Suite 100
Fullerton, CA 92833 
Each session will accept a maximum of 15 students.  For more information about the fullerton campus, please contact Susie Min at (714) 525-2257 or email susie@avidacademy.com.
Annual Excellence in Mathematics Awards Ceremony and Ice Cream Social
Avid Academy will hold its 4th annual Excellence in Mathematics Award Ceremony to honor Orange County's exceptionally talented math students.  An ice cream social will take place immediately after.
 
Date: Saturday, June 12, 2010
Time: 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Location: DeNault Auditorium, Concordia University, Irvine
Schedule:
  • 4:00 - 4:15 PM: Introduction
  • 4:15 - 5:15 PM: Awards Ceremony
  • 5:15 - 6:00 PM: Ice Cream Social
The event is free of charge and open to students of Avid Academy.  Seating is limited.  Please RSVP with number of participants in your party by June 6, 2010: Award Ceremony RSVP.
Two Southern California Students Made 2010 U.S. Physics Team
AAPT has released the roster of the 2010 U.S. Physics Team.  Vincent Li, a junior from Arcadia High School and Jonathan Li, a junior from St. Margaret's Episcopal School were among the 20 team members.  The team will attend an intensive training camp from May 21 - June 1 at University of Maryland and a traveling team of five students will be selected to represent United States to compete at International Physics Olympiad in July.

2010 USAMO Winners and Honorable Mentions Announced
The American Mathematics Competitions announced 2010
USAMO winners and honorable mentions.  Three southern California students were recognized:
  • George Xing, Universith High School, Orange County 
  • Kevin Yin, San Marino High School, Los Angeles County 
  • Thomas Swayze, Canyon Crest Academy, San Diego County

California Math League Results
California Math League 4th grade, 5th grade, and Algebra exam results are available.  The following students received perfect score:

2010 California State Science and Engineering Fair
The 2010 California State Science Fair will be held on May 17-18, 2010 at California Science Center.  The following Avid students qualified for the State Science Fair.  Click on the student's name to view their project abstracts.
