About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.
Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Natalia Komarova from the Mathematics Department at UC Irvine has accepted our invitation as a guest speaker at the 2010 All-Girls Math Tournament on April 18.

An accomplished author, Prof. Komarova is a renowned expert in applying mathematics to emerging disciplines such as biology and linguistics. In particular, she makes mathematical models of different diseases to help doctors find better methods of curing them. She also studies how different people see colors, and how humans come up with names for colors. For our younger audience in grades 3-8, Prof. Komarova had chosen a special topic on "Mathmatics of Colors".

The All-Girls Math Tournament is now open for registration and the spaces are filling up quickly.  If you know of anyone that might be interested in the event, please refer them to us at Orange County Math Circle (www.ocmathcircle.org).

Thanks so much!

Mathematicians Without Borders
Wendesday, February 24, 2010

Responding to a call for help from our national math network, the Orange County Math Circle hosted the American Mathematics Contest (AMC 10/12B) exams on February 24, 2010 for a team of twenty-five high school students from China during their US visit.

Representing magnet high schools in Shanghai, the group made a stop in Irvine after their college tour on both Coasts and attending the Harvard/MIT Math Tournament. It's fun to make new friends through a shared interest--a great example of mathematicans without borders!
