About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.
Dear Friends,

I am very pleased to announce that Orange County All-Girls Math Tournament will take place on Sunday, April 18th, 2010 at St. Anne School in Laguna Niguel.  Mrs. Joanne Williams, the Assistant Principal of St. Anne School, has responded to our call for help and offered their beautiful campus to make this event possible. We are deeply grateful for the generosity bestowed upon us from enthusiastic supporters like Mrs. Williams. Such support enables us to serve more students in discovering the joy of mathematics.

Again, please spread the word about the Orange County Math Circle by forwarding this newsletter or our website (www.ocmathcircle.org) to other students, parents and teachers.  Thanks so much!

Happy Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year!

2010 New Year Invitational
Sunday, January 10, 2010

The OC Math Circle started the New Year with a big bang!  Over 100 students participated in the New Year Invitational - a MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage.  Benjamin Chen, a fifth grader from Pantera Elementary School, won the Countdown Champion.  Hang Yang, an 8th grader from Corona Del Mar Middle School, took the first place in Individual Round.  Sierra Vista Middle School (Dennis Shim, Arjun Srinivasan, Nikhil Mishra, and Andrew Thai) finished first in Team Round.  For complete results, please visit: 2010 New Year Invitational Results.

The event would not have been possible without all the help from students, parents, teachers, and coaches.  Special thanks goes to Alex Zivkovic, the Scimmage Director, and the Organizing Committee - James Liao, Marvin Liu, Andrew Ma, Deborah Ma, Jennifer Yoo, Elisa Young, and Brian Wagner for all of their hard work. To get a glimpse of the event, please read: 2010 New Year Invitational.

We hope the Scimmage was helpful in warming up students for the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition at UCI on Saturday, February 20, 2010.  Best of luck to everyone at the Chapter Competition!
