About OC Math Circle

The Orange County Math Circle was founded in 2007 by math enthusiast Johnny Li (St. Margaret's Episcopal School, Class of 2011) to bring his experience from San Diego Math Circle to share with more students in his hometown.  Please read Orange County Math Circle, A Service Learning Project by Dr. Michelle Muratori of Johns Hopkins University to learn more about its history.
Dear Friends,

Before we break out for the holidays, I am excited to announce we are now accepting registrations to the 2010 New Year Invitational - A MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage on Sunday, January 10, 2010.  The event is free and is open to all students in grades 6-8.  We anticipate a good turnout from local top teams so, sign up early!  Also, since OCMC is a very young organization, please spread the word about OCMC and our events by forwarding this newsletter or our website (www.ocmathcircle.org) to other students, parents and teachers.  Thanks so much!

Happy Holidays!

2010 New Year Invitational
 - A MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage

Sunday, January 10, 2010, 1 - 5 PM, Concordia University

The Orange County Math Circle is hosting the 2010 New Year Invitational - A MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage on Sunday, January 10, 2010.  Special thanks go to Alex Zivkovic, Class of 2013 from University High School, for volunteering to serve as the director for this event.  This free event is open to any students in 6th through 8th grade.  We will accept both teams and individual students for the competition.

We invite all schools who participate in MATHCOUNTS to send their official team to this scrimmage.  It is a great way to practice as a team in a simulated low-key environment before the chapter competition in February.

For students who don't belong to a school team or those whose school does not participate in MATHCOUNTS, this is an excellent opportunity to experience the excitment of this contest.

To encourage younger students to take part in MATHCOUNTS, the organizing committee created a special category just for 6th graders who will compete in their own division with easier problems at Pre-Algebra level.

To register, please email Alex at AlexZ@OCMathCircle.org with the following information:

  • Student Name
  • School
  • Grade
  • Gender
  • Parent Name
  • Phone Number
  • Parent Contact Email
  • If you wish to register as a team (4 persons), please include a note with the team members names.

For more information about the event, please visit Orange County Math Circle 2010 New Year Invitational.  To try out some problems, please go to MATHCOUNTS Sample Problems.
Donate Used Math Books
If you have used math books in good conditions, please consider brining them to us at any future OCMC math events.  We will sort the books and distribute them to underprivileged students.  Our next collection will be during our 2010 New Year Invitational from 1 to 5pm on Sunday, January 10 at Concordia University in Irvine.

So, take a few moments during the break and go through your books.  Instead of letting the unused books collect dust, you can help many needy students with learning through your generous donations especially during today's economy.  If you have any questions, please contact Johnny at joli@smes.org.  Thanks in advance for your support.
Events
All-Girls Math Tournament
Spring 2010

To encourage more girls to be more interested in math, we are planning an All-Girls Math Tournament in spring 2010.  Elisa Young, Class of 2013 from Edison High School, has volunteered to serve as the Tournament Director.  Detailed information will be available after the New Year.  Elisa and volunteers are currently seeking a place to host the event.  If you or someone you know can help us with a place or have suggestions on how we can make this event more interesting to girls, please contact Johnny at joli@smes.org.
