Material Men
This morning as I drove to work I was listening to a radio program which featured stories about number of women who are contenders for various Senate seats around the country.  The piece focused on the ways that these women arrived on the political scene; avenues for the most part different from their male counterparts. The piece concluded with the journalist's hopeful statement that perhaps someday, a feature like this would not be necessary as a woman senate race would be nothing unusual, only remarkable for the views and passions of the candidate rather than her gender.

And so we hope it shall be in the future for the male quilter. In the meantime, while the quilting world is in its current transition phase our local quilt museum is sponsoring Material Men: Innovation and the Art of Quiltmaking at the LaConner Quilt Museum. Among others the exhibit will feature the work of 15 quilters who happen to be male including Joe Cunningham and Thom Atkins

For your inspiration - the work of more quilters of the male gender.  What do you think- do men bring a unique esthetic to the quilt art form?

Ink Workshop - The Crayon Thing
Instructor: Barb Schultz
Class Fee: $45.00
One Session Class: Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, 11am to 4 pm

There are a variety of patterns and embellishment techniques that use crayons for color. Crayons provide a soft color that is especially effective in quilts with hand embroidery - in fact one of our favorite hand embroidery pattern designers Crabapple Hill uses crayons a lot. However crayons on cotton fabric have a couple of drawbacks - they are really more permanent on a cotton/poly blend fabric (we quilters don't tend to have much of that around !), you only get one kind of a tip to work with, and it can be difficult to get the shading to come out just the way you want. Never fear!  Barb has come up with a way to use the Fabrico Markers by Tsukineko instead of crayons  more...
