Featured Teacher
Janet Fogg
|
April 28 and 29.
Mostly self taught, Janet has been sewing since childhood when after losing her mother she claimed the family sewing machine as her own. "It became a tool for survival, both practically and emotionally." Janet knew at a young age that she wanted to be an artist and pursued a graphic design degree and a career in art direction.
What she didn't know was that someday she would sew her art. "After leaving my design career to be a stay at home mom, I began to patch my two creative worlds together. All it took was one quilt and I was hooked."

Many of the idea generation and design skills she practiced as an art director have surfaced in her approach to quilt making including visualization and brainstorming. "The idea or the beginning is the most important part of the work."

It looks like at long last that spring is here, and we remember here at the shop why we live in the Pacific Northwest. We are also inspired to be spring cleaning! We have a bunch of stuff (kits, bundles, notions etc) that we need to get rid of.....so, we are having sale. April 14, 15 and 16th - all fabric in the shop is 25% off and in addition we have lots of goodies at 50%-60% off !
I am not really an impulsive, jump on a plane and go kind of gal...but I went so far as to look to see if there were any flights to New York that would get me there in time to see the quilt exhibit sponsored by the American Folk Art Museum. Fortunately for my checkbook, things are were full at the reasonable times of the day, but I was ready to go.For those of us who did not get to attend in person, there are lots of ways to check out this exhibit in through lots of other lenses. Check out the article below for some ways to take a look at this amazing exhibit of red and white quilts. If you have not seen pictures, take a look, not only are the quilts spectacular, but the way they are displayed is breathtaking.
There are still some spaces in the Janet Fogg class, Innovative Traditionals offered here at the shop. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of Janet's expertise in a smaller group setting (the class is limited to 12 students). This is a two day class, the first day will be devoted to design and design drawing and on the second day, you will begin to sew on your design, and Janet has a variety of techniques to show you that will help you translate your design into fabric. Janet will also lecture on Thursday evening, April 28th. Take a look also at Laurie Shifrin's Class, Sunset over Sedona....she is coming to teach one of her newest patterns in May.!

Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts
|
The American Folk Art Museum dramatically transformed the Park Avenue Armory's historic 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall with the installation of 650 red and white American quilts, all of which were on loan from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. It was the largest exhibition of quilts ever held in the city. As an extraordinary gift to the public, entry to this unprecedented event was free. Take at look at this exhibit - and be sure to read the story. This is an 80th birthday gift for the woman who is donating these quilts to the museum - these are not quilts made for show, for special occasions or made by well known quilt makers. These were everyday quilts, made to cover a bed, to swaddle a child and made in red and white, we assume to satisfy the maker as well as serve the practical purpose of colorfastness. - iphone and Android app

- Interview with the curator and designer of the exhibit and article about the owner of the quilts
