Greetings!
"It is hard to be a true individual these days but it's certainly more achievable if you make an item yourself from scratch, putting your own mark on it"

Thanks to all of you who have asked....the renovations to our new space are coming right along. You can see a few pictures on our blog, and there will be more next week as I am headed to Port Gamble at the end of the week.  I understand the new subfloor is in and the crew has started on the interior walls.

We also have a new website.......it is easier to navigate, and has an extra layer of security. You can now browse our fabric inventory  by collection, by designer, or by manufacturer or theme.

20% offWe are having a website sale January 31st through February 6th. See coupon below for details and the promotion code.

Piecefully,
Kris

Lecien
CelebrationWow! We received a pile of big boxes from Lecien ( pronounced loo shen) of Japan a few days ago in the shop. It is always an event - we never know for sure when they are coming or which part of our order is coming.

This time, along with fabric, we also received our Cosmo floss assortment. This is beautiful 100% cotton thread that feels and acts like silk. It will take us a little while to photograph the spools for the website, but in the meantime we should at least have a color chart up with numbers in the next week or so.

Furoshiki for Quilters

Gifts

We have all worked hard to remember how our grandparents shopped - and are becoming more diligent about carrying our groceries and purchases in reusable bags. Now we can look to Japanese tradition for reusable gift wrap.

Furoshiki (pronounced "f'-ROHSH-kee") are traditional Japanese wrapping cloths - the term is adapted from an older use of the word which meant "bath wrap" and does not refer to any particular size or fabric. Most Furoshiki are approximately one-and-a-half to a little over two feet on a side. They usually have a printed pattern and a stitched hem around the edges. (We are quilters - we were made to share our fabric!) Unlike wrapping paper, which is often too creased and weak to effectively reuse, furoshiki can be part of a gift, and can be used again and again. They can also be tied up in various ways to make an "instant bag."

The Japanese Minister of the Environment has been promoting a revival of this eco-friendly practice for several years - promoting a cloth similar to the fabric they bags are made from that are now widely available in North American grocery stores. The Ministry has also published a downloadable pdf file of several ways to tie and wrap the cloth.  And Ehow has directions on making your own cotton Furoshiki.

Featured Teacher
Pamela Hastings

Pamela Hasting will be one of the first teachers in our new classromm at Port Gamble.

Pamela Hastings has been playing with dolls and various fiber and paper art media since she was five. She does not always teach in the traditional Western, step-by-step way, with a similar finished product for all participants, but she likes to think that by using her own low-key style, and making herself available to each student, she is able to elicit even more of the wisdom that is available in a group of students as a whole.

Pamela does also know a lot of techniques for working with fiber, paper and mixed media and has had a lot of problem-solving experience. She is very generous with sharing these as well. Her training as an occupational therapist helps her to adapt projects and classes to the needs of each student.

Her work has been published in many magazines, 3 of Suzanna Oroyan's books, 2 of the FIBERARTS Design books, MAKING CREATIVE CLOTH DOLLS and ARTFUL PAPER DOLLS  from Lark press, in four of her own books to date, and has been seen in galleries and museums in North America and Great Britain. She teaches internationally online and in person. See more at her website:
