I decided to pick this subject this month because as a professional Executive Coach, my recent experiences in coaching panel selections have highlighted the difficulties that corporate buyers experience in procuring coaching -  a selection continuum ranging from casual confusion of price comparisons through to an exacting outsourced process almost as long as a coaching engagement itself. 
 
In one tender this Spring with a Fortune 50 company, based in the UK, who wanted to partner with best in class coaches the selection process was outsourced and involved a rigorous application form followed by a 2hrs session in a coach assessment centre (i.e. live coaching session with panel).
According to this client, "the competence and suitability of executive coaches in the marketplace varies dramatically and neither paper qualifications nor client recommendation have proven to be accurate indicators of coach quality".
In Ireland, ESB recently conducted a six month procurement exercise involving some 94 tender applications being narrowed down to just five successful applicants (of which Xenergie was one - see article).
 
On the other side of the continuum, it is not unusual that I am called by an HR business partner just asking for price quotes without understanding what they are seeking.  It's a bit like buying a diamond - you need to understand the qualities, options and fit for purpose - the differences between a qualified coach, an accredited Executive Coach and a coach with specific expertise or additional consulting/mentoring skills such as systems thinking and track record of relevant business experience.  Also the different approaches to coaching - from 1-1 coaching for performance improvement, to developing leaders to group and team coaching for transforming whole organisational cultures.   All these make a difference to what you are buying, the needs of the situation and the desired outcomes/benefits to the coachee and the organisation.   Quality diamonds don't come cheap but their sparkle lasts forever!

Synopsis:
As both suppliers and buyers are pushing for greater professionalism, quality standards and more ethical practice  a more strategic perspective on coaching in organisations is still needed. The procurement, use and evaluation of coaching services need to be aligned to the overall strategic goals of the organisation.

Historically most executive coaching services in UK and Ireland have been purchased on the basis of recommendations, referrals and sometimes face to face interviews. This paper concentrates on the selection process of external Executive Coaches and looks at best coaching selection practices from the coaching literature and latest surveys on the subject.

Xenergie Consulting Ltd, a leading organisational coaching consultancy, has announced it has won a two-year competitive deal to provide executive coaching services to the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). 

Xenergie beat 94+ other companies to win the contract with 5 other suppliers following a notice in the European journal and tender for contract. Through the deal, Xenergie, will provide accredited Executive Coaches for the ESB coaching panel and coaching services such as supervision for the 80 internal ESB coaches.

1. Unfamiliarity with the terrain leads to an oversimplification of the situation, insufficient thinking and resource, confusion, lost direction - a lack of proper preparation
2. Reluctance to enter the chrysalis leads to procrastination or avoidance through fear of the abyss
3. Premature and non supported flight (i.e. Lack of specialist support, review - time to build, nurture and grow internal capability)
