To Ignite the Fire of Renewal we must Learn HOW to Collaborate in Cross-Boundary Teams
January Greetings from Lorna McDowell
campfireRecently I read about the death of innovation in Silicon Valley. The magic "mojo" that created a whole industry in technology has fallen foul of the reductionist science of management, gradually suffocating vitality and stifling  breakthrough ideas, according to a Business Week study.

Companies and institutions are not investing in the right things or creating the right space for people to experiment with new ideas, says reporter Steve Hamm.  Lawrence et al (1996) talk of a new phenomena in society - "Me-ness" where people are too focused on introspection and unable to collaborate effectively.  And according to Andy Grove of Intel, companies are "not paranoid" enough about the changing shape of the future, they're too complacent that they can just stay the same.  He's very concerned.

These all add up to insufficient opportunity for the exchange of meaningful dialogue and experiment that leads to transformational change and invention.

The new economy that rises out of the currrent crisis will be centred around social and environmental sustainability build on relationships, as opposed to achievement and profitability as it is has been.  Sustainability can only be enabled through the cross-boundary  and cross-company collaboration of diverse people and teams - strangers who will come together to share resources and knowledge and create the new.

How can we achieve this if teams don't' even know how to talk to each other and build constructive  and trusting alliances? Cut to the chase, this really matters.  This is no pipe dream, it' has to happen. Ask Google, ask Harley Davidson, ask Cisco ... businesses that are already transforming themselves accordingly for this new world.

Now is the time to ignite the fire in the bellies of your change activists and call them together - the  "midwives" who will bring forth the new.    As Winston Churchill once said: "History will be kind to me for I intend to write it."

Outperforming and "OutBEhaving"

"In today's hyper-connected world power increasingly is derived through people - through relationships, authenticity, transparency and openness.  The source of competitive advantage in the 21st century is such a new idea that it has not yet entered Websters or the Oxford."  Outperforming by Outbehaving, Business Week, DonSeidman October 2008 (see link at bottom for full article).

In our commoditised business environment, we are running out of areas of differentiation but there is one area where tremendous variation and variability still exists - one that we have not yet analysed, quantified and systematised and one, in fact, that cannot be commoditised or copied - the realm of human behaviour.

Curious about what this might mean for your company?

Are you willing to be measured on your integrity?

Free feedback coaching session with every Leadership Assessment: €195 + VAT

"...the one thing has the potential to create unparalleled success and prosperity in every dimension of life.  Yet is it the least understood, most neglected, and most underestimated possibility of our time.  That one thing is TRUST" Stephen Covey.

Integrity and trust slip off the tongue as easily as they find themselves in corporate mission and value statements, and as easily as 'credit crunch' marketing that now proliferates our daily routines from lunchtime menus to early Xmas sales.   But perhaps if organisations really understood what it means to lead with integrity, we wouldn't be in this crunchy situation now.

When reality hits home, these words are much harder to walk than talk.    And it starts at the top. Culture eats strategy for breakfast.

"Culture is so much more powerful than strategy.  If you name me the five top businesses in the world, I'll show you five brilliant cultures - not necessarily five brilliant strategies," Irish Director, Winter 2008/9.
