It's On My Heart

Question: "What is a door worth?"
The saga continues. I have always wanted to say that, this is the first time I can recall that it is really true. If you were with us last month, I discussed a home we are planning on building with a local Builder. He has a Realtor who acts as an agent to smooth the buying process out. He met with us on a Monday evening to finalize the details. Earlier that day, the Builder had sent over a small copy of the blueprint to redline (add or subtract the things we wanted to change) to make the home "our home".
The Realtor asked to see our changes, so I pulled out the prints. My wife had a couple of things she wanted: a door out the master bath onto the deck was one of them. In fact, that was pretty important to her. In fact, it becomes REALLY important later on. She also wanted to do away with a counter between the kitchen and the dining room, to open it up more. The Realtor looked at the drawing and said four words that crushed my wife. "Not a good idea." She asked, "Why?" He said, "That we would not be able to sell the home if we had a door off the master bath; it was a deal breaker. OK, the only issue I have with that is that we are not building it to sell; we are building it to live in. Sure, I understand that it will be sold sooner or later, perhaps when I leave this earth. Then it is certainly no longer my problem. But even if we would need to sell earlier, we have very clear ideas of what we want in our new home.
