Gentry Retires

NUCA of NM took a big step years ago and became committed to work with NM OSHA in order to improve relationship with the agency, and to improve health and safety in our industry. Starting with an OSHA Alliance and progressing into an OSHA Partnership, we have relied on the expertise, cooperation, advice, consultation, guidance, and friendship of Howard Gentry, NM OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialist. Howard has been a part of NUCA of NM for many years serving on the Safety Committee and assisting with our Alliance and Partnership while serving on the Zia Verification Committee. Most of all, he was always only a phone call away for many with a general question or concern, and his main objective was always to promote health and safety in our industry by education and consultation.

Happy Retirement Howard!! You will be sorely missed. We do look forward to working with, and warmly welcome, Laure Dreher as our 'go-to' NM OSHA liaison.

Please join us at the next Safety Committee meeting on 7/11/2012 at 8am at the Association office.

Good News/Bad News on Highway Bill

The Final Step

Both the House and Senate are scheduled to vote on the conference report to accompany H.R. 4348, the surface transportation reauthorization bill.  Our message to lawmakers is simple: VOTE FOR IT!  Read the TCC coalition letter in support.  This is a critical vote and victory for our industry and association.  There are some bill opponents, so your immediate calls to Capitol Hill are important - the U.S. Capitol Switchboard number is (202) 224-3121.  Once connected to you lawmaker's office, ask them to "Vote for the Surface Transportation Bill Conference Report."

Unfortunately, the PAB language we worked so hard to maintain in the measure was pulled at the very last minute due to a tactical manuever unrelated to the substance of the PAB language.   The silver lining is that we impressed the conferees and House and Senate PAB bill sponsors throughout the process, who have vowed to find an alternative legislative vehicle to advance the bill this year.  More details to follow in the next NUCA Washington Report.

NUCA Safety Director's Forum

NUCA's Safety Directors' Forum Oct. 16 & 17

SAVE THE DATE!
We'll return to Ft. Worth and the Renaissance Worthington Hotel, for the annual  Safety Directors' Forum, sponsored by NUCA's National Partners on October 16 and 17. Watch this space for details in the coming weeks.

NUCA's annual Safety Director's Forum brings together utility construction safety and risk management professionals for two days of networking with peers and information-packed learning from experts and from each other to create and maintain accident-free job sites.

The program's topics change each year.  It is designed to keep safety and risk managers informed to better serve their company and prevent OSHA fines and unnecessary accidents. This unique combination of theory, regulatory updates and practical information is structured to deliver the construction safety techniques practiced by experts.  Topics to be covered in the 2012 SDF are to be determined.

Past topics have included:

  • Fundamentals of Rigging
  • Next Generation of Operator Training
  • Contractual Risk Transfer
  • Motion is Money
  • Silica Dust in Construction
  • Safety Perception Survey
  • Near Misses
  • Seeing is Believing
  • Your Legislature in Action
  • Open Discussions
