From the Executive Director's Desk:

Welcome to 2010! I am excited for the upcoming year and what NUCA of NM will be doing. The Board of Directors met in December for a Strategic Planning Session and established goals that you will see come to fruition over the next 12 months.

Your dues invoice was sent out and is due back ASAP to the NUCA of NM office. Not only has the dues structure changed a bit this year (no increase) but there is also a new member category. With the utility industry having a broad range of involvement, the NUCA of NM Membership Committee has added the new category to better fit members. The three membership categories are:

Utility Contractor membership shall consist of any person or entity having demonstrated an interest in the underground construction industry and this Association who is engaged in the underground construction industry.

Contractor membership shall consist of any person or entity having demonstrated an interest in the underground construction industry and this Association that performs contracting services that supports the underground utility construction industry.

Associate membership shall consist of any person or entity having demonstrated interest in the underground construction industry and this Association; engaged in the support of the underground construction industry.

We have been busy adding benefits and enhancing your membership over the past few years and this year NUCA of NM is focusing on growth. Please talk to your colleagues about NUCA and NUCA of NM.

Also, congratulations to Dan K. East for being sworn in as the National Utility Contractor Association's Chairman of The Board for 2010.

 NM Legislative Session

The NM Legislative Session started on January 19, 2010 and although this is a thirty day session and the focus should be on budgetary items, Carla Sonntag, NUCA of NM Lobbyist, will be working and watching for any legislation that may effect the construction industry. Legislators have until February 3rd to drop legislation, so watch for legislative alerts in your email box.

Recently, you may have received email alerts on two bills that are related to voter fraud in New Mexico. A New Mexico based group called Hispanos Unidos has been fighting for voter identification for a few years now and this year the bill HB97 has been introduced by Dianne Miller Hamilton. This bill would require In-Person voters to present photo identification before voting and also provides funds for free identification cards.

Also, Jim R. Trujillo has introduced HB123 which allows same day day registration at early voting sites and to vote without showing any identification.

NUCA of NM is tracking both of these bills because Voter Fraud is bad for every New Mexican.

Please take a few moments to make phone calls on Legislative Alerts sent out by NUCA of NM. There are several other issues that we may be taking a position on such as: tax bills that affect the industry or licensing, procurement etc.
