| From the Executive Director's Desk,
You should have received an application for a couple of things last month -
1. NUCA of NM/OSHA Zia Partnership Application - Please return these to the Association office no later than March 2nd, 2009. If you are not sure what it's all about, please call me at the Association office to discuss the benefits for your company and opportunities to make your company an even safer place to work. As a contractor, you are still a member of the NUCA of NM/OSHA Alliance and are eligible for free and low-cost training. The ZIA Partnership is voluntary and has no-cost to you. It's an opportunity for you to be recognized for your hard efforts towards safety, and/or to bring your company to a level of safety by utilizing the benefits of the Partnership and Alliance.
2. NUCA of NM Safety Awards Application - I would like to encourage all companies to submit an application for the 2008 Safety Awards. There are several categories, so your company will be a perfect fit. This is only open to NUCA of NM members and will be awarded at the Associate Showcase on April 16, 2009.
The NUCA William H. Feather Application submission date has been extended to March 13, 2009.
You can download all of the applications online and mail or fax to the Association office.
On February 27, 2009, NUCA of NM is having a Santa Fe Summit. This is a group of interested parties going to Santa Fe to see how the whole process works; we'll tour the Roundhouse, sit in Chambers and/or Committee meeting and have lunch. If you are interested, please contact me at 505 888-0752. A free shuttle picks you up at the train station in Santa Fe and drops you off at the front door of the capital building.
Next week -March 3- March 6 - is the NUCA Expo in Phoenix, AZ. I will be attending the Expo to represent NUCA of NM, but you can still reach me. Please call or email if you need to get ahold of me and I will get back to you promptly.
Regards,
Jane Jernigan, Executive Director |

OSHA PPE Final Ruling
In December 2008, OSHA issues final rule on clarifying employers' duty to provide personal protective equipment and train each employee
Each employee not protected may be considered a separate violation and penalties assessed accordingly. This revised language is consistent with language in other standards for which per-employee citations have been upheld.
The final rule amendments do not add new compliance obligations. Employers are not required to provide new kinds of PPE or hazards training or use a different approach than what is already required. Additionally, employers are not required to provide PPE or training to employees not already covered by existing requirements.
