| President's Message,
The New Mexico Legislative Session is in full swing and our lobbyist is working hard to keep us informed on proposed legislation. You have received a call to action recently on SB 33, and I appreciate your phone calls to the Committee members on this bill. SB 33 is designed to replace the annual wage rate survey with mandatory use of union collective bargaining agreements, and although there are some major problems with the current survey systems, we do not feel it is fair that 6% of the construction industry sets the wage rates for the other 94%. For several reasons, this bills keeps getting delayed in Committee, but that only affords us more time to oppose the bill, and Carla more time to talk to Committee members to oppose the bill.
There are several bills that we are watching and have taken positions on; you may view the list by clicking this link: NUCA of NM Positions. Keep in mind that this list may change on a daily basis and our position may change on certain legislation with amendments to the bill which can be an addition, a deletion or a change to the current language. If you have any questions, please call the Association office at 505 888 0752.
On February 19, 2009 our lobbyist, Carla Sonntag will give an update on legislation at the NUCA of NM Membership Meeting. There will also be a speaker that is going to present the facts on the Federal Legislation known as "Card Check." You need to know what is going on at the State level and the Federal level in regards to Card Check, please CLICK HERE to register. We will also be signing the NUCA of NM/OSHA Zia Partnership at this meeting. Boyd Dunham
