New Art Gallery Presents an Evening in Support of FCMS
Hancock 309 Gallery exterior
Dorchester has a new art gallery near Fields Corner, Hancock 309 Gallery and Consignment. Located in Glover's Corner at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Hancock/Freeport Streets, the gallery is helping to expand the cultural life of Dorchester and bring more foot traffic to the area.

We are very pleased to announce that as part of its new show, Traditions Remixed, Hancock 309 is hosting an evening to support Fields Corner Main Street next Thursday, September 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. Suggested donation $10.

Traditions Remixed features the work of MassArt alumni and Black Artists' Union members Destiny Palmer and Stephen Hamilton. Palmer and Hamilton recently formed an artist collective to create a supportive community for young artists of color. In their first exhibition together, they will be displaying work from the past few years as well as some new pieces. With vibrant colors and designs, they reinvestigate, reinterpret and expand upon aesthetic influences from jazz, hip-hop music and culture, African and Afro-American textiles and more.

Prominent Building in Fields Corner to be Renovated Soon

As part of the Historic Neighborhood Centers Program, a partnership between Historic Boston Incorporated (HBI) and FCMS, the two-story commercial building next to the Fields Corner Branch Library at 1510-1514 Dorchester Avenue will undergo a complete faade rehabilitation later this fall. Owner Stephen Golden will rehabilitate the building's exterior to reflect its history and upgrade the storefronts to support the businesses within and improve the economic health of the district.

The building was built in the 1890s but its faade has been significantly altered and barely shows evidence of its history. One of the few remaining historic details is an elaborate wooden cornice that runs along the roof line. Located across from the Fields Corner mall parking lot, the building is highly visible and restoring some of its lost architectural character will have an important impact on the neighborhood.

The project, which will be managed by HBI, includes installing uniform storefronts and a new, lighted sign band. The rehabilitation will be inspired by historic evidence and will retain a traditional appearance but use modern materials that are durable, easy to maintain and energy efficient. Metal siding on the upper floor will be removed and new clapboard siding will be installed to match the original siding visible in historic photos. The windows in the second floor will be replaced with operable double-hung windows and the cornice will be restored.

The building's storefront tenants include Dr. Frank Nghiem D.M.D. Dorchester Dental Office, A. Dalliance Lingerie, Magic Wok and Bargain City. The Dorchester Youth Collaborative (DYC) occupies the second floor. Each business will install new signs following the building renovation. FCMS is working with the businesses to obtain graphic design and financial assistance through the City of Boston's ReStore Storefront Improvement Program.
