Standing in Solidarity with Darfur Victims

"Whenever, wherever people suffer, and I know about their suffering, and if I don't, it's my fault, too, but if I know and do nothing, I am responsible for their suffering." (Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor)

South Carolinians have a unique opportunity on October 6th to stand before many of those seeking the presidency from both political parties to influence their views on one major human crisis in the world.  We will raise our voices so loudly that they will hear the prayers and suffering of the people of Darfur and make Darfur a major issue of the 2008 campaign.  That day we will use our feet and voices to let the candidates know that South Carolinians want them to use their power to STOP THE GENOCIDE IN DARFUR even before they get elected.  By seizing this opportunity we will let the world and the Sudanese government know that the genocide in Darfur, the first one of this century, must end now.

We have the power on October 6th to tell the world: "NO MORE GENOCIDE." If enough of us RALLY media from around the world also will come.  When the candidates see thousands of South Carolinians standing in solidarity with Darfur children, women, and men--all victims of unspeakable atrocities, we pray they will be convinced that Darfur should be a significant part of their campaign and, ultimately, of the next administration.

This event, with major presidential candidates standing before thousands of South Carolinians stating "NO MORE GENOCIDE" in the presence of international media, will effect the Sudanese government.  With your presence, along with that of your family and friends, we will send a strong message to President Omar al-Bashir that he cannot continue his scorched-earth policy against the people of Darfur.

For over four years Bashir has been able to defy calls by the international community to stop the genocide and terror. For over four years his government has continued to sanction and participate in genocide.   These actions have resulted in the burning of villages, forced removal of more than 2.5 million people from their homeland into refugee camps in neighboring countries or squalid displacement camps inside Sudan, and the raping of women and children.  These policies have resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people a month, estimated to have reached has high as 500,000.  Even the recent resolution by the UN Security Council has not stopped the killings that are taking place in the refugee camps and isolated areas of Darfur.

Prayer of a Darfuri Woman

"I want to join my prayers to many other voices.  Every few months we are driven away from one refugee camp to the other, so far in the desert where nothing, nothing at all exists.

This is no way for a human being to live.
No way to live in such a shocking place-uncultivated, waterless, treeless and barren region!
Everything is barren, hell, hell!
Yet, Lord, we believe you are there, beside us.
We pray for all the Africans living now our same condition.  Bring back peace and tranquility to our beloved country.  Peace which is desired by everybody, the old and young, rich and poor,
women and men. Amen. Amen. Let it be so."

Gloria Silvano, Sudan/CAFOD
