in this issue
  • Who is the SC Christian Action Council?
  • 2005 Highlights
  • Thomas Cahill to be 2005 Solomon-Tenenbaum Lecturer at USC
  • South Carolina's Education Funding System Needs Improvement

  • 2005 Highlights

    Here's what we're up to in 2005:

    1. Public policy advocacy. The Council continues to monitor the effects of recent legislation and anticipate significant opportunities to advocate for moral and ethical legislation in the second year of the current Legislature.

    2. Christian Unity. The Council's board, work groups, officers, and staff represent the broad Christian community in SC. We work and pray and serve together as a visible witness of the oneness for which Jesus Christ prayed.

    3. Inter-religious dialogue. The Council has participated in events and dialogues around the state; the most recently focused on Muslim-Christian relationships. See Solomon-Tenebaum Lectures below for information on our upcoming event!

    4. Restorative Justice. The Council is a member of the Restorative Justice Interfaith network and helped to coordinate the recent workshop on Restorative Justice at the National Advocacy Center at USC. The network will continue to coordinate activities, share information, train, and promote restorative justice.

    5. TEAM. The Ecumenical AIDS Ministry of the Council will research, plan, and implement a new ministry focus in the coming months. TEAM will recruit and train volunteers for a transportation and support ministry focusing on rural areas and persons with HIV/AIDS living in poverty.

    6. Peace-making. The Council has prepared and led seminars on "Working for Peace in a Time of War." The seminars are still available. Please contact the Council office to schedule.

Thomas Cahill to be 2005 Solomon-Tenenbaum Lecturer at USC

Noted author and lecturer, Thomas Cahill, will be the 2005 Solomon-Tenebaum Lecturer at USC on November 15th and 16th, 2005. The lectures are free and will be given in the Suditorium of the School of Law.

The Council is helping to coordinate book discussions and dialogue groups in conjunction with the lectures. Two of Cahill's books: The Gifts of the Jews and Jews, Christians and God's Word: A Common Heritage of Prayer and Action will be the basis of our discussions.

Like to host one of the discussion groups? Contact Brenda Kneece at [email protected] or 803.786.7115.

South Carolina's Education Funding System Needs Improvement

The Council continues to work with others to promote equitable, adequate funding for all South Carolina school districts.

SCCAC supported the March for Education Equity and is a sponsor of the DVD documentary, "Corridors of Shame: The Neglect of South Carolina's Rural Schools".
