Aidmatrix Coordinates U.S. Donations for Honduran Flood Relief Honduran First Lady's Office Directs Donors to www.aidmatrix.org/honduras |
DALLAS, TX - October 27, 2008 - Recent tropical storms in Honduras have left thousands homeless as flooding and evacuations continue. The president of Honduras has declared a national state of emergency. The Aidmatrix Foundation in partnership with the Republic of Honduras' Office of the First Lady and COPECO Honduras (the Honduras National Emergency Management Commission) are asking donors to visit the Honduran Portal on the Aidmatrix Network® for disaster relief to view the most urgently needed items posted by relief agencies: www.aidmatrix.org/honduras. (This website is available in both English and Spanish.) "The main needs are food, water, clothes, shoes, blankets, and stoves," stated Yaneth Contreras, Despacho de la Primera Dama (First Lady's Office), Government of Honduras. More specific needs can be viewed on the portal as they are posted by the relief agencies. Financial contributions are preferred. This allows relief organizations to purchase exactly the items that are needed to assist in the response and recovery efforts. It also allows the items to be purchased locally, saving money on transportation costs while helping support the local economy. Financial contributions can be made through www.aidmatrix.org/honduras. These donations will go directly to the nonprofit organizations assisting the Honduran Flood evacuees affected by the disaster. During times of disasters Americans respond with tremendous generosity, however in order for donations to make the biggest impact there are some important tips to follow:
1. Confirm the Need Before Collecting. To do so, offer your donated in-kind products via the Honduras portal www.aidmatrix.org/honduras. This online system will share offers with nonprofits in Honduras to help get the right aid, to the right people at the right time.
2. Volunteer Wisely to Help Others: In a community struggling to respond to and recover from a disaster, an influx of unexpected or unneeded volunteers and in-kind donations can make the process even more difficult. Before traveling to the disaster area to help, learn where and when your skills will be needed. Discuss with volunteer organizers how your needs for food, water and shelter will be met while you are volunteering. For more information on volunteering please contact the Volunteers for Prosperity initiative of USA Freedom Corps at www.volunteersforprosperity.gov. The program is a U.S. presidential initiative that gives America's highly skilled professionals new opportunities to serve abroad. The site contains a powerful volunteer search engine powered by Network for Good. 3. Financial Donations Always Make an Impact: In times of disaster, knowing that financial assistance is on the way can quickly increase relief efforts on the ground, in the form most needed at that time. Please visit the cash donations section of www.aidmatrix.org/honduras to answer the plea for assistance put forth to us by the First Lady's Office of Honduras to assist them and their on-the-ground relief partners.
