Consumer Culture
Opening Reception: Friday, May 4, 6-9 p.m.
| | Artwork by Kitty Hubbard |
Included in this group exhibition, juried by M.E. Ware are works in a variety of media addressing the issues surrounding and resulting from the insidious desire for consumption and the waste products produced by fulfilling that need. Examples are an installation by Chicago artist, Mary Ellen Croteau, who uses plastic bottle caps of various colors in "Endless Columns", named after Constantin Brancusi's iconic work, to comment on the endless amount of plastic waste we each contribute to the environment. Kitty Hubbard employs a variety of media on her re-purposed grocery bags, including scanned grocery lists, and handwritten memories. The work speaks of a time when brown paper grocery bags found use as book covers and wrapping paper.
M.E. Ware is Associate Professor and the head of Sculpture at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, where she teaches a wide variety of studio and critical theory courses. She is committed to research and teaching and conducts lectures, presentations and workshops at national conferences, seminars and universities.
Artists represented in this exhibition are Michelle Acuff, Judy Anderson, Ifeoma Anyaeji, Barbara Bend, Vicki Bethel, Lauri Burrier, Mary Ellen Croteau, Amandine Drouet, Sarah Hahne, Jennifer Hecker, Christine Holtz, Kitty Hubbard, Stephanie Jackson, Kathleen Spencer Johns, Katie Kapuza, Judi Krew, Lee Lee, Linda Williams McCune, Barbara McIntyre, Mitzi Mize, Noël Morical, Susan Nadis, Crystal Neubauer, Jody Oesterreicher, Karen Rechtschaffen, Carrie Schumacher, Hannah Simmons, Jane Strasma, Jen Thario, K. Metta: A New Look at the 4 Rs of Consumer Waste
Opening Reception: Friday, May 4, 6-9 p.m.
Artist's Talk: Sunday, May 20, 1-3 p.m.
 | | Artwork by Sarah Hahne |
Woman Made Gallery (WMG) presents a solo show with select works by Sarah Hahne. In her statement Hahne writes: "The focus of this body of art is the 4 Rs of consumer waste: reduce, reuse, recycle, and reclaim but the underlying theme is Metta. Metta is a 2,500 year old convocation. It is a 4 part thought, wish, or blessing that is sent out in 4 tiers, starting with the self and moving outward. In this work I have made a connection between the 4 aspects of Metta and the 4 Rs of consumer waste management."
Hahne has studied printmaking, painting, anthropology, comparative literature, and art education. She has exhibited widely in the Chicago area in several solo exhibits and numerous group shows, including shows juried by the late Ed Paschke and as well as Judy Chicago. Hahne has work in private collections throughout the United States. She has received degrees from Beloit College and the Art Institute of Chicago. She has also studied at the University of Illinois, Chicago campus, and the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Sarah Hahne will give an Artist's Talk at Woman Made Gallery on Sunday, May 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. All WMG events are free and open to the public.

Ritual Regalia for Contemporary Living
Opening Reception: Friday, May 4, 6-9 p.m.
 | | Artwork by M.E. Ware |
Woman Made Gallery (WMG) presents a solo show with select works by M.E. Ware. This body of work consists of wearable and conceptually wearable garments designed to illuminate contemporary society's need for ceremony and ritual as well as to question the commodification of spirituality. These garments and their display mechanisms use irony and humor to expose the deficiencies of modern ideology and social discourse with regard to our human desire for "meaning" and a purposeful life. The juxtaposition of traditional media such as cast iron and bronze with non-traditional, post-consumer "waste products" encourages a more thorough investigation of the issues these works embody: gender roles and job inequity, consumer debt, product poisoning, health care, natural resources and environmental destruction.
M.E. Ware is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. She employs irony and humor in her art to expose the deficiencies of modern ideology and social discourse with regard to the human desire for "meaning" and a purposeful life.

WMG Celebrates 20 Years of Readings A History of Connection: Old Friends
Sunday, May 6, 2012 / 1:30-3:30 p.m. / Free

The stereotypes of women as nurturers, builders and guardians (gardeners) of connection is based in a goodly amount of reality. And in the absence of such connection where would we be?
With twenty years of building and sustaining community, a place for woman artists to come together and shine, Woman Made Gallery relies on old friends as well as new to carry it forward. The first reading of 2012 featured writers in their 20s. This reading includes poets whose involvement with the gallery spans 10 or more years: Allison Joseph, Maureen Seaton, Cin Salach, Pamela Miller, Mars Caulton and former literary curator, Lauren Levato. Please join us for this free event on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery.
