Welcome to our new E-Newsletter informing you about exhibitions, events, calls for art, and all the other good things happening at Woman Made Gallery (WMG).

The new fiscal year started on July 1, 2009, and we are looking back with gratitude to a year filled with much positive activity. Organizational development under the guidance of Alison Zehr and the WMG board, exciting programs with much good art, wonderful poetry readings, a most successful Gala event, and support by new and renewing members, donors and volunteers, has helped WMG and its artists to get noticed and recognized. For the July 2009 issue, Today's Chicago Woman readers choice awards selected Woman Made Gallery as one of the best art galleries in Chicago.

WMG received an immediate boost in July 2008 with a generous donation of $10,000 from our Anonymous Donor. Important grant support followed throughout the year from the Illinois Arts Council, The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Arts Work Fund, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, and the Efroymson Family Fund. In addition WMG is the recipient of many valuable in-kind contributions from board members and other generous benefactors. Please read our Sponsor Page for details.

The Gala and Benefit Auction in April 2009 was truly a most wonderful and successful event. With the tremendous help of many supporters we were able to raise more than $57,000!!! We thank our co-chairs, Pamella Capitanini and Amy Stoeffler, for their leadership and generosity. We appreciate the input by our Auction Committee and all Board and Staff members, who have helped to make this another successful fundraiser. We are most grateful to all our sponsors who have donated to the good cause, all individuals and businesses who have placed ads, and we thank all our contributors whose gifts were used in the live and silent auction and in our boutique section. Thank you Mo Cahill for doing a great job with the adbook, and thank you to Shannon Downey and Pivotal Production for being our expert event planner! And of course we couldn't do what we do without our great volunteers. Thank you for all your hard work for Woman Made Gallery throughout the year. Please visit our website to read details about the Gala Event.

The new year begins with renewed vigor, a new board, new exhibitions at WMG, and also an off-site show at Robert Morris University. Many thanks to Amy Galpin who did a lot of work to put this show together. Please visit the exhibition Online to get a glimpse of the tremendous variety of art included. All our exhibitions are online, and it's the next best thing to being there in person.

We are most grateful to our jurors, who put together fabulous exhibitions, and to our artists, whose work continues to breathe new life into this organization. All our exhibitions, current and past, may be viewed on our website, and all upcoming events are listed in our Calendar. Please support our work to provide exhibition opportunities for women artists and to educate the public about women's artistic contributions. We appreciate comments and any feedback to help us serve you better.

Sincerely,

Beate Minkovski

Board & Staff

Changing of the Guard
Thank You Board, Staff
and Volunteers!

June 30th was the end of our previous fiscal year, and we said good-bye to several wonderful board members who have helped guide WMG in the past.

Nicole Gotthelf and Wilma Stevens

We thank Nicole Gotthelf, our outgoing President, and Wilma Stevens, who has served most recently as Vice President, for their enormous contributions to WMG. We thank Michele Sexton Dorvil and Donna Korey who each served WMG part of the year as Secretary and on the Auction Committee. We truly appreciate all the work and devotion that each of them gave to help make WMG a thriving arts organization.

We are happy to welcome and introduce our new board with President Rebecca Sive, Vice President Anita Jenke, Treasurer Mary Keefe, and Secretary Marty Bash. Other board members include Pamella Capitanini, Robin Malpass, Amy Stoeffler, Elena Aguirre Sznajder, Cheryl Toles, and Cassandra West. We are grateful to all our board members, and look forward to work together productively to benefit the organization.

There are also staff changes to report. Amy Galpin, WMG's Gallery Coordinator, has received a two-year fellowship in San Diego, California, and she will leave WMG at the end of August. We thank Amy for all the good work she did, and we wish her all the best with her new position.

We are grateful to our interns and volunteers who work so enthusiastically at WMG. We truly could not do our programs without them.

Annual Members' Show

Artwork by Dora Natella

Woman Made Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its new juried exhibition, the Annual Members' Show, on Friday, July 31, 2009. On display are a diverse range of work, featuring 41 artists who explore issues from identity, to social and political landscapes, to the human condition.

Entries were juried by Judithe Hernández, a Chicago artist who was a founding members of the Chicano Art and Los Angeles Mural Movements of the 1960's. Regarded as one of the important visual artists of the period, she was also the only female member of the seminal and influential East Los Angeles artist collective, Los Four, who broke the museum barrier with the first major exhibition of Chicano art in the United States.
