Exhibitions, Poetry and Performance

Woman Made Gallery is pleased to announce the
opening of a new group exhibition, "Object of Desire,"
and "Divided Beauty," a solo exhibition by Ginny Sykes.
The Artisan Gallery is continuing its "Object of Desire"
exhibition curated by Mary Stoppert and Carmen M.
Perez.
Please join us at the artist reception on Friday,
October 10, from 6 to 9 p.m., at 685 N. Milwaukee
Avenue in Chicago. Works will be on display until
November 13, 2008.
In addition to group and solo exhibitions, Woman
Made Gallery presents a poetry reading hosted by
Lauren Levato on Sunday, October 19, from 2 to 4
p.m., and a poetry and dance performance by Pont
des Arts Ensemble on October 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Regular Gallery hours are Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday from 12 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday
from 12 to 4 p.m.
"Object of Desire," juried by Claire Wolf Krantz,
brings together the work of thirty-four artists creating in
a variety of mixed media, including glass, clay, fiber,
wood, paper, and beads.
The exhibition explores cultural symbols and
metaphors, the creative process, diverse materials,
and individual lust. While some pieces were created
with purely aesthetic motives, others serve functional
purposes. Each of the included works reveals
thoughtful approaches to the subject matter.
In addition to being an artist, Claire Wolf Krantz is
an art critic, contributing to Art in America,
Sculpture, Flash Art, ArtPapers, and other
publications. She has curated exhibits for institutions
such as The Spertus Museum, The State of Illinois
Museums, Wood Street Gallery, and the Ukrainian
Institute of Modern Art. She has lectured at various
institutions and universities in the U.S., Europe, South
Africa, and Indonesia.

Woman Made is honored to have Katrina Markoff,
owner and founder of Vosges Haut Chocolat, serve as
Award Juror for this exhibition.
The Artist Reception is on October 10 from 6 to 9
p.m. and works will be up through November 13,
2008.

Ginny Sykes - Divided Beauty
Woman Made Gallery is pleased to announce the
opening of "Divided Beauty," a solo show by Chicago
artist Ginny Sykes. Comprised of mostly works on
paper, Sykes employs etching techniques with paint,
charcoal, and other media to create totems, homages,
and celebrations that examine historically gendered
archetypes and symbols within a feminist
discourse.
Sykes's performance work incorporates dance,
sound, text and visual art installations, most recently
in "Velocity" by the collaborative group VIGA. "Lessons
of Water and Thirst" was co-created with Pont des Arts
Ensemble and their newest work, also
entitled "Divided Beauty," will premiere on October
24th at Woman Made Gallery.

Artisan Gallery: Object of Desire
Reading: Object of Desire - 10/19/08
Woman Made Gallery is looking forward to a
reading by poets published by and editors of two
Chicago feminist poetry presses, dancing girl
press and Switchback Books. Hosted by
Lauren Levato, the event takes place on Sunday,
October 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery,
685 N . Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, in conjunction
with the "Object of Desire" group shows.
Featured readers include Mairead Case, Helen
Kiernan, and Beatriz Ruiz from Switchback
Books, and Melissa Culbertson, Simone Muench,
and Susan Slaviero from dancing girl
press.
The event is free and open to the public, and
refreshments will be served. For information contact

Performance: Pont des Arts Ensemble - 10/24/08
Woman Made is hosting an evening of music,
poetry and dance by Pont des Arts Ensemble,
described as "a sensual banquet of poetry & music,
passion and spirituality". Pont des Arts Ensemble is
an example of the global renaissance of the marriage
of poetry and new performance media.
Pont des Arts Ensemble has created a new
collaborative work to coincide with Ginny Sykes'
exhibition "Divided Beauty." The event will take place
on Friday, October 24th beginning 7:30pm at Woman
Made Gallery, 685 N Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago.
Featured are poet, composer and multi-
instrumentalist Richard Fammeree, singer-songwriter
Carrie Ingrisano, cellist Meg Lauterbach, electric
guitarist Victor Sanders, dancer Jeanette Aylward,
visual artist Ginny Sykes and poet Rachel Webster.
The dance will premiere at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. along
with music and poetry readings throughout the
evening.
The event is free and open to the public and
