One Planet, One Experiment
Woman Made Gallery is pleased to announce the
opening of its new juried group exhibition, "One
Planet, One Experiment." The show brings together
the work of 34 artists and includes sculpture, painting,
etching and photography.
The show's title is inspired by the writings of
American ecologist E.O. Wilson, which examine the
threats that human activity pose to the environment.
From the colorful found object installations of Efrat
Hildesheim, to the eerie photographed sculptures of
Cynthia O'Dell, this group show presents a variety of
perspectives on humans' often destructive interactions
with the physical world that they inhabit.
Jurors Lynda Cole and Leslie Sobel are both
practicing artists whose knowledge base extends
beyond the realm of visual art and into that of the
environment. Cole is both a member of Michigan's
WSG Gallery and a former landscaping business
owner, while Sobel is one of the founders of Art
Alchemists, a collective of artists who use digital
technology in the creation of their works. Both artists
will exhibit a body of their work simultaneously with the
group show.
Exhibiting group show artists are Tomoko Abe,
Katharyn Addcox, Jane Ingram Allen, ATYL, Sandra
Bacon, Arden Bendler Browning, Nicole Clare
Campbell, Sage Chettle, Marnie Victoria Fender, Julie
Ganser, Christie Ginanni, Cherie Hanson, Michelle A.

environment.

Lynda Cole - The World Between Black and White
Using black-and-white altered photographs
transferred to the back of half-inch Plexiglas, Lynda
Cole's images are the visual equivalent of the sound
of rain on the roof on a melancholy day.
Lynda Cole received a B.S. in Textiles and
Clothing Design from Michigan State University, after
which she lived and worked in New York City. She
moved to Ann Arbor and attended the University of
Michigan for two years to study Botany. From 1976-
1990 she ran her own landscaping company. From
1990- 1995 she lived in London, England, where she
spent most of her spare time visiting museums,
galleries and studios, experimenting with 3-D forms
made of new materials, and developing her art. Since
1996 she has been making and exhibiting the
products of her studio work.
Exhibition Dates: September 5 - October 2,
2008

Jean Nerenberg - Our World and Beyond
Jean Nerenberg's delicate and transparent
watercolor and mixed-media paintings reveal her
increasing concern with the future of our planet,
threatened by nuclear destruction, global warming,
and man's own inability to peacefully co-exist.
"I work abstractly, experimenting with the
watercolor medium, intending to transcend the usual
landscape form. I allow the accidental qualities that
are the nature of the medium to inform the ultimate
direction the works take."
Jean Nerenberg is a Chicago artist with a B.A.
from Northwestern University. She studied at the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at Instituto
Allende, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. She has
exhibited her work in Arizona and Illinois.
Exhibition Dates: September 5 - October 2,
2008

Leslie Sobel - Phase Change
"I am an artist working with my relationship to the
natural world. I am interested in the intersection
between artistic expression, personal understanding
and scientific knowledge. My work incorporates data
and scientific visualization alongside painting, words
and mixed media.
My work starts with aerial landforms - satellite
images downloaded from the NASA website.
Manipulating these images digitally, I merge them with
other informational systems, such as topographic
maps and climatologic charts that relate to the
geographic area of the images I choose. Then, I print
the images on my large-format archival inkjet printer
and mount them on cradled panels. The imagery
chosen highlights changes, vulnerabilities and loss
due to climate change."
Exhibition Dates: September 5 - October 2,
2008
