Mary K. Connelly - Topophilia: New Interiors
As painter, Mary K. Connelly's studio practice
is strongly rooted in the illusionist
tradition, influenced by the intimate
interiors of Vermeer, Bonnard, and Hopper.
She began her formal education at the Rhode
Island School of Design Pre-College Summer
Program and received her BFA in painting at
Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri
in 1983. Mary earned her MFA in painting in
2000 from Indiana University in Bloomington,
Indiana. The artists' work has received
numerous awards: "Curator's Choice Award" in
2001 at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 73rd
Regional, and a "Purchase Award" at the
museum in 2002. Her paintings are included in
the permanent collections at Grand Valley
State University in Michigan and the
University of Arts and Science in Oklahoma.
In the spring of 2007 Mary's work won "First
Place" in the 10th International Open 2007 at
Woman Made Gallery and most recently
Connelly's work was featured in an
invitational four-person exhibition at the
SFMOMA Artists Gallery in San Francisco in
January 2008.
"Inspired by my reading of The Poetics of
Space, this current body of work is entitled
Topophilia--small paintings of room interiors
that convey an intimate sense of "love of
place". I agree with Bachelard's notion that
"the house is our first universe, a real
cosmos in every sense of the word."
My paintings are a distillation of perception
and memory, where color and light convey a
world psychologically and spiritually
charged. Interior space is presented as a
chamber for mediation, evoking memories or
daydreams of a beloved solitary place. As
"home," the interior is fraught with
conflicting feelings of entrapment and
private repose. Architecture is used in this
series as a formal and conceptual devise to
represent a tension between the interior and
exterior world. The empty interior can also
be viewed as a metaphor for consciousness-a
container for my ruminating, restless mind."
Opening reception: February 29 from 6 until 9
p.m. Works are up through March 27, 2008.
Please join us for a Gallery Talk with
Mary K. Connelly on Saturday, March 1 from 2
to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the
public.

Shelly Jyoti - Beyond Mithila: Exploring the Decorative
Woman Made Gallery is proud to introduce
Shelly Jyoti, a visual contemporary artist
who also delves in traditional decorative
art forms. With a Masters degree in English
literature and a diploma in textile and
fashion technology, she is based in Baroda,
India. Shelly Jyoti is an international
exhibiting
artist and her interdisciplinary work in
designing garments, painting and poetry
writing has appeared in solo and group
exhibitions within India, Singapore and North
America.
"My present body of work represents a fantasy
of heritage: the patterns and confluence of
traditional art forms and references to
embroideries and embellishments from India. I
like to explore and reinterpret indigenous
decorative traditions within my art practice.
The decorative style of art that I create is
like revisiting the past. As a contemporary
artist and a creative individual, my heritage
refers to all that I have inherited. The
ideas, designs and patterns eventually become
my connection with visual media and other
creative expressions."
Opening reception: February 29 from 6 until 9
p.m. Works are up through March 27, 2008.
In addition to her solo show, with more than
15 paintings, Shelly Jyoti is offering
insights into the inspiration for and
creation of her art at a workshop on March
15th. Included will be a lecture, slide
presentation and the creation of a piece of art.
Workshop with Shelly Jyoti: Madhubani Art of

Artisan Gallery: Speaking to My Ancestors
As artists, history speaks to us in some
manner every time we are creating a work. The
exhibit "Speaking to My Ancestors" explores
how artists use their specific family
histories in their art. This exploration
could be a craft or artisan process with
material, or a technique that has been passed
on through time or that has been rediscovered
and resurrected. It can take a narrative
form, with the artist in a dialogue about
her past.
Curated by Mary Stoppert and Carmen M. Perez,
represented artists include Adrienne Blum,
Susan Breeland, Helga Dangel, Toni Bennett
Easterson, Ruth Ann Howden, Pepper Johnson,
July L. Kahle, Denise Labadie, Dory Maier,
Diane Masi, B.J. Morgan and Judith M. Osmer.
"Speaking to My Ancestors" artworks will be
on display through March 27, 2008.
