Greetings! Welcome to our new E-Newsletter updating you about news, exhibitions, events and calls for art at Woman Made Gallery (WMG). We would love to hear your comments and suggestions. First, let me share recent Gallery activities with you. Though funding for the Illinois Arts Council was recently decreased by 30%, WMG is fortunate to have received an adjusted preliminary recommendation of a $7,120.00 grant. Because the arts are always in danger of being cut from government budgets, we urge you to write your state representatives and let them know how important the arts are to you and your community. Get involved and visit www.arts alliance.org/adleg.shtml to speak out, take action and raise awareness. This first quarter of our fiscal year, the gallery received a generous gift of $10,000 from an Anonymous Donor and a $1,000 donation from our Advisory Board Member, Mary Ann Thompson-Frenk, in support of our work for women artists. Membership is steadily increasing and we received 44 new and 119 renewal memberships from July 1 to September 21. One of the more invigorating challenges WMG is undertaking is the development of a five-year strategic plan. This process is being guided by the intelligence, expertise and generosity of Alison Zehr, a nonprofit management consultant, and Rebecca Sive from The Sive Group, Inc., both Advisory Board Members. In addition, all of our Board Members are investing their time and experience to create a plan that will ensure the future of WMG and improve its programs and services. Regarding our Outreach Programs, WMG is continuing its fruitful collaboration with The Women's Treatment Center in Chicago, providing art workshops to its clients, taught by Carmen M. Perez. The project is supported in part by a grant from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation. On August 25th the gallery honored its members and volunteers with a warm and wonderful Recognition Brunch. Without them, much of the important work WMG provides would go unfulfilled. Two examples of this are the valuable work of Marty Bash who who has helped with volunteer coordination for more than two years, as well as membership and editing, and Karen Rechtschaffen, who volunteers at the Gallery regularly. I extend my deepest gratitude to the WMG board, staff, volunteers and supporters for their productive service and vision for WMG. ![]() Beate C. Minkovski, Executive Director

Woman Made Gallery announces the opening of In Praise of Physical Labor, a group exhibition juried by artist Ursula Kammer-Fox. Works by artists from across the United States and Canada will be featured in the show, which runs from October 12 to November 8.. Representations of urban, rural and domestic workers are among the diverse responses to the theme of labor. The beauty of manual tools and the unique nature of handmade items are highlighted as well. In addition WMG is featuring solo shows by Ursula Kammer-Fox:, Ode to Tools, and Peggy Lipschutz:, Women in Dangerous Professions.
The Artisan Gallery at Woman Made exhibit, Naked Clay, is the result of a call to clay artists asking them to create and submit works that were finished with a single firing; any coloration had to be in the clay when it was fired or it must have occurred as a result of the firing process. The featured artist, Regina Simas of Oxford, Ohio, is a standout with her use of Neriage, an ancient technique in which modeling and decoration happen at the same time. The exhibition is up through November 8th. All exhibitions at Woman Made's Artisan Gallery are curated by Mary Stoppert and Carmen M. Perez. View current and past shows, and find out how to submit your work for upcoming exhibitions.
Her Group is the new name for the Gallery's monthly Women's Art Group, where women artists meet to share their work, exchange tips and give feedback. Co-facilitated by artists Deb Flagel and LuEllen Joy Giera, we have invited abstract artist Sandra Perlow to be our guest for September. Woman Made Gallery is offering valuable professionalism workshops led by artist Janet Bloch. Workshops will cover resumes, image quality, artist statements, pricing and goal setting. She will also focus on where to find opportunities and how to identify if they are right for you. Bloch has extensive experience giving professional workshops for artists interested in exhibiting their work. She has presented workshops regularly at Chicago's Woman Made Gallery for over a decade and has also offered her programs at Around the Coyote Foundation (Chicago), Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL), Suburban Fine Arts Center (Highland Park, IL) and most recently at the Self Employment in the Arts Conference and at Judy Chicago's Through the Flower Foundation in New Mexico.
Don't ever miss a deadline! Calls for art are regularly posted on our website and upcoming shows include: the 11th International Open, juried by Barbara Koenen, and Clay and Fiber, juried by Dorothy Hughes. We accept digital entries and slides of your work, online and by mail. Let us know if you have questions and tell us how to make it easier for you to enter a show at Woman Made Gallery.
