Chicago -
January 5, 2004
Group exhibition with art by 45 women from across
the country and overseas and solo show with work
by Alice Sharie Revelski opens on January 21st with
an artist reception from 6-9pm at Woman Made
Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.
Group Show
Devils and Dolls
Juried by Rebecca Sive the group exhibition includes
48 original fine art pieces of devils and dolls in all
media, including video work.
Ms. Sive selected work from over 180 entries and had
this to say: "This exhibition theme juxtaposes two
powerful words and the provocative imagery and
ideas each evokes. Indeed, at least since the story
of Adam and Eve was first told, and the first lessons
were drawn from that tale, women artists have
wrestled with these images and ideas: ideas such as
the notion that beautiful women induce devilish
behavior, yet women should strive to be beautiful at
all times; and that to be less than ladylike, i.e., "doll-
like," is to court unhappiness."

Solo Show
Dolls as Heroes
"Dolls as Heroes" presents nine artworks by Alice
Sharie Revelski featuring paintings of dolls in her
collection and an artist book by the same title.
Revelski's faux-naïve painting style facilitates an easy
viewer connection to her diverse dolls.
In Revelski's own words: "Textures, patterns, and
quality are all characteristics that inspire me when I
paint the dolls from my collection. Most of the dolls
are antique and seem to have a history or past that
emerges when I use them as the models for my
paintings. I work part time in the children's
department of a library and often a book that I am
reading or illustrations that I see will coincide with a
painting that I am doing and this connection will bring
the painting together."
