Economic Growth Draft Strategies
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
DETROIT IS NOT A ONE INDUSTRY CITY
Employment Districts

Opportunities for economic growth and jobs for Detroiters of all skill-levels exist beyond the borders of traditional employment centers like Downtown and Midtown.

Some draft Economic Growth strategies-and four other planning elements-will be shared with the community from August to September 20 through a series of events and activities. Community reaction and feedback will be recorded and used to complete the Strategic Framework Plan at the end of October.

Today, the city's economy has strength in education and medical sectors ("Eds and Meds"); "new" economy activities such as information technology and creative economy activities; and traditional industrial activities like manufacturing and transportation and distribution. Detroiters are also interested in increasing opportunities for local entrepreneurship.

After months of research, analysis, and dialogue with business leaders and the community; the Long Term Planning team is recommending leaders focus their attention on 4 MAJOR JOB OPPORTUNITY AREAS that will benefit Detroiters who possess varying skill-sets. Additionally, they have identified 7 EMPLOYMENT DISTRICTS that present the best opportunity to leverage existing land and infrastructure to support sustainable economic development in the city.

"Creating jobs and prosperity can have the single largest impact on all aspects of Detroit's overall sustainability," said Dr. George Swan III, Long Term Planning Steering Committee member and Vice Chancellor for Wayne County Community College District. "Jobs solve a lot of problems for people, and they also can help strengthen the tax base which will help our city become more sustainable."
