Community Conversations
The community making decisions about Detroit's future

We are excited to say that the Conversations are continuing! At Community Conversation #2, we heard from more than three hundred Detroiters!

The conversation focused on Building Blocks that contribute to Strategies for the Future of Detroit. The Building Blocks themselves presents us with options for how to better use our existing land, and will serve as a decision-making tool that will be a part of the final strategic framework plan that can be used by all. Strategies will be the main topic of Community Conversation #3, already underway. More information on each of the Building Blocks can be found on our Website or on Facebook. Please see below for the meeting dates and times for the final Community Conversations location.

In honor of Detroit's greatest asset...its people, the Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning is hosting the photo exhibit "Detroit Street Photography" by Bob Oren. Bob's photos vividly encapsulates a slice of Detroit life by capturing the essence of people, buildings and events.

"Detroit is rich with character and personality, and I enjoy connecting with the city through photography. While the city is constantly changing and evolving, there is also a fierce sense of history, and I try to blend these contrary aspects into my images," says Oren.

"Detroit Street Photography" is on exhibit until June 8, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 2929 Russell Street in the Eastern Market. Open to the public. Admission is free. Call (313) 259-4407 or email info@detroitlongterm.com for more information.

Detroit Stories
DETROIT STORIES: 015 TRYING TO GET OUR HUSTLE
DETROIT STORIES: 015 TRYING TO GET OUR HUSTLE

Wayne Ramocan grew up in East English Village trying to get his hustle by going door to door mowing lawns for elderly citizens in his neighborhood.  But now, he feels fortunate to be on staff with a thriving community organization: the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance.  Interacting with fellow driven Detroiters, Wayne both sees and experiences the tangible fruits of his work.  Geographically, Detroit is quite a large city, but socially, for Wayne, Detroit is actually quite small, because in various networks, he continues to overlap with the same conscious individuals over and over again.  Simply put, everybody knows each other.  Wayne takes great pride in living in Detroit, and he feels that it is a necessity to overturn the notorious misconceptions often associated with the City.  According to Wayne, Detroit is a city that builds character, and he expresses a sentiment that the people of Detroit are the ones who should be crafting the identity of the City, because they are friendly, outgoing, well-connected, eager to learn, and willing to help.  Just like he is.

The 2nd series of Detroit Stories is launching on Thursday. Click here to go to the Detroit Stories Project website to view all the videos.

During the month of May, the Street Team has been hard at work supporting the outreach for the Community Conversations by dropping informational materials in residential areas across the City and in libraries, schools and commercial areas in Detroit.

During the month of June, the Street Team will assist with outreach for the upcoming Telephone Townhall, as well as keeping the public engaged and informed about any updates on the project.

For any questions about the Street Team, please contact Shamyle M. Nesfield.

Engagement Map

This map provides a shapshot of face-to-face events that took place as part of the Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning (DWPLTP) process in April 2012; it also includes - but does not highlight - engagements between October 2011 and February 2012. To date, we have reached 35,230 citizens. The DWPLTP's reach is based on a combination of participation (head counts) and distributed information (materials). It is not a strict sum of these two measures.  For a comprehensive overview of all DWPLTP civic engagement events to date, visit our website.
