 | Alumnus Spotlight - Jim Bishop
|
EASTERN 2009 Computer Network Administration/Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate, Jim Bishop, is Upper Moreland School District's Network Administrator. He turned his interest in computers into a successful career in the networking field, while gaining a head start at EASTERN.
Bishop was only interested in computers on a hobby-level while growing up. While in tenth grade, Bishop became interested in the programs offered at EASTERN. Of the 14 programs offered, Computer Network Administration and Electronics Engineering Technology interested him the most. After a visit to EASTERN, he felt as though Computer Networking Administration would be the best fit. Bishop was so successful in the Computer Network Administration program that by the end of his first year at EASTERN, he was hired as a paid intern for EASTERN's Technology Management Systems Department.
After high school graduation, Bishop completed his Associate Degree in Computer Networking at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC). MCCC's Network Administration Concentration of the Networking AAS program prepares graduates with knowledge and skills in networking, computer support, and data communications. Bishop entered MCCC with 12 credits earned through his Computer Network Administration program at EASTERN. Bishop plans to pursue his Bachelor Degree in Business at Temple University.
After his internship at EASTERN ended in 2011, he saw a job posting for the Upper Moreland School District Network Administrator position. During his second interview for the position he was asked to respond to potential network problems explaining how he would approach the issues in each scenario. He was hired by EASTERN alumnus, Ian Carder, Upper Moreland School District's IT Coordinator. Bishop is responsible for the network and server maintenance for all of Upper Moreland School District. He works with all administrators and staff on a daily basis.
"I do not know where I would be without the education I received at EASTERN - but I do know that I would not be as happy as I am," said Bishop. "Computer Network Administration is not an easy class, but if you work hard, the field can take you far. Or if you are like me - it can take you right across the street from EASTERN."

Inside EASTERN - EASTERN Cosmetology Students Make a Commitment to an Exciting Career
|
EASTERN Cosmetology students are finishing up their summer hours. In order to become a licensed Cosmetologist students need to complete 1,250 hours of class time. Since this exceeds the time allotted in the two-year Cosmetology program offered at EASTERN, students attend classes for six weeks during the summer of both their junior and senior years of high school. EASTERN's Cosmetology program provides the skills necessary to begin a career in the cosmetology field. In Pennsylvania, as well as other states, cosmetologists and nail technicians must be licensed to practice in the field.
Students attending EASTERN's Cosmetology program save time and money by completing a nail technician and/or cosmetology program while still in high school. This provides the student a substantial savings as the cost of a private beauty school after high school averages from approximately $2,000 to $12,500.
"Our students are dedicated to pursuing their career goals," said Wendy Leyden, EASTERN's Cosmetology Instructor. "They take this time commitment seriously and work hard throughout the summer in order to achieve the hours necessary to take the Pennsylvania State Boards for Cosmetology. I am proud of their efforts and enthusiasm for the field."

 | Facts About Career and Technical Education |
According to the Southern Regional Education Board, "students who complete a rigorous academic core coupled with a career concentration have test scores that equal or exceed "college prep" students. These dual-concentrators are more likely to pursue post-secondary education, have a higher grade point average in college and are less likely to drop out in the first year."
