Greetings!
Happy New Year! We've held-off sending newsletter updates to our subscribers for the last two weeks due to the holidays and allowing you to get caught-up with your in-box and those stacks of paper on your desk. Hopefully you've gotten through all that spam and back-up and your 2012 has gotten off to a great start.
It's time for Northern Priming to get back to work to help you find ways to increase you and your customers productivity and profit in 2012 using factory finished products. Look for new tips and tricks from us in the coming months of how we can help you provide more value to your customers through products like Bear Clips and Bear Skins (coming in February), touch-up paint in aerosol cans to seal end-cuts/rips (coming soon), color fasteners to match your siding and trim project (coming soon), as well as other time-savers and ideas to make you and your customers jobs better.

Air Dry vs. Kiln Dried?
When it comes to choosing air dried wood versus kiln dried (KD) wood, as a factory finisher - if we had a choice, 100% of the time we would choose kiln dried. Why? Here are three reasons why we and three reasons why you should specify kiln dried wood when possible for ALL of your projects:
- Kiln dried wood that is going to be prefinished generally comes from the mill below 19% moisture content (mc). 19% mc is the ultimate maximum mc for coating (factory priming/finishing or field applying primer/paint) any wood product. If wood has a coating put on it and the MC is over 19% - blistering, peeling, coating failure will be eminent. If we as a factory finisher receive wood that is over 19% mc, we will not coat that wood. We will test it with a moisture meter and wait for it dry to 19% or below. This is also the reason why you should BUY AND USE A MOISTURE METER AND KEEP THE LUMBER SHIPPED TO A JOBSITE DRY!!!
- When wood is kiln dried correctly, the result is like getting a laundered and starched shirt from the dry cleaner. Proper high quality kiln drying ensures that there will be no bows, checks, crooks, cups, splits, twists, or warps. For Northern Priming, that means KD prefinished material runs through our machines better, less down time due to problems with the wood. For you, this means material will not need to be culled at the jobsite, you get 100% usable material. KD material can pu moisture between the mill and the jobsite, so you should still BUY AND USE A MOISTURE METER AND KEEP THE LUMBER SHIPPED TO A JOBSITE DRY!!!
- Kiln dried wood eliminates unnecessary moisture from the wood. Four things are necessary for rot and decay to start - food (the wood), temperature (between 40 - 105 degrees fahrenheit), oxygen (the stuff we all have to have), and moisture. One thing we have some control over regarding decay in wood is moisture. Kiln drying is the best way to control moisture in wood products and get wood to an acceptable level of moisture content. KD wood keeps all of us out of rot and decay claims and it will keep you out of rot and decay claims as long as you keep the material dry and install it in a way that moisture is drained, deflected, diffused, and designed to flow away from the wood. That in mind, you should BUY AND USE A MOISTURE METER AND KEEP THE LUMBER SHIPPED TO A JOBSITE DRY!!!
One of the best references for wood products is a book written by R. Bruce Hoadley: Understanding Wood, A Craftsman Guide To Wood Technology. There is a lot of very good information in this book, including info on air drying, kiln drying, and moisture content. Click here for a link to buy it on Amazon, the Kindle download is available too.
Finally, take a look back to May 1946 (sixty-five years ago) to see what L.V. Teesdale, an Engineer with the Forest Products Lab in Madison, WI had to say about building with dry lumber: Good Houses Are Built Of Dry Lumber. They've been saying this for a long time, good lumber is dry lumber! One last thing, it has been stated three times previously in this article... as a contractor or lumber sales professional you should BUY AND USE A MOISTURE METER AND KEEP THE LUMBER SHIPPED TO A JOBSITE DRY!!! You should continue to learn and understand how moisture affect all products that you install and sell.
