Greetings!

flow coater with sidingThe tip and trick we want to bring to you this week are two little products that will make your siding jobs install easier, faster, and last longer. From Bear Cub Industries let us introduce you to the Bear Clip and the Bear Skin.

The Bear Clip will help you:
  • Install a drain plane between the siding and sheathing.
  • Install your siding in perfectly level rows.
  • Allow for perfect overlap on siding.
  • Allow for ONE PERSON installation of siding.
The Bear Skin will help you:
  • Easily flash siding butt joints.
  • Prevent moisture from penetrating butt joints in siding.
For more info on Bear Clips and Bear Skins, go to their website (click the links above), or look for Vern in the Denver market or contact us directly as we will be stocking both clips and skins to supply with your factory finish orders.

If you have any questions about Northern Priming and Prestain or about anything dealing with prefinishing, prepriming, or the remanufacturing services we can provide, please do not hesitate to contact us, just ask for Vern, Brent or Brad (contact info below).

A Drain Plane?

Do you use some kind of drain plane when you install siding?
A drain plane could be a critical component for you as a builder or remodeler when you are installing exterior trim and siding products. As a professional building products sales person you should know about drain planes so that you can communicate best practices, and others like it, to your customer.  A drain plane will make an exterior siding and trim job last a long time, leave less room for installation errors, and finally keep everyone from costly call-backs.

What is a drain plan?  It is a gap that is left between the siding and the housewrap that prevents capillary action from trapping moisture in the walls of a home.  The first minute of this video from Drain PlaneTM shows you WHY a drain plane is good sense. Click HERE to watch the video.

There have been several studies over the years that have advocated the incorporation of a drain plane or rain screen between siding and house wrap.  The reason for this is that a rain screen makes the paint, the siding, the house wrap, and the building envelope last longer.  The gap between siding and house wrap should be anywhere from 3/8" - 3/4" to allow for moisture to drain.  Less than 3/8" and capillary action will cause your siding and building envelope to deteriorate due to moisture that will get trapped. For more info check out this article from Bill Robinson on Why Water Runs Uphill, which details capillary action... click HERE.

You can find very little if any direction in siding manufacturers (wood, composite, fiber cement, you name it) installation instructions for a drain plane. Yes, some areas of the country require it by code, which is a start.  But those are few and far between, why?  Because manufacturers believe incorporation of items like a drain plane add cost to a job, and we are in world where added cost means the difference between the decision to use one product over another. While a drain plane may add some cost, if you consider the cost of call-backs, product failure and your reputation - items like a drain plane make good sense.  Unfortunately, our industry hasn't gotten back to the point we were at pre-1940 and construction projects were built to last.  We are still interested in building as cheaply as possible.  Which means our construction projects today are NOT built to last.  If you are a builder, remodeler, or building materials professional - advocate, use, practice, call attention to tips like a drain plane as these ideas will separate you from your competition.
