What is Photo-Degradation?
Extensive research by the United States Department of Agriculture's Forest Products Laboratory over decades indicates that a primary cause of coatings failing to perform on exterior surfaces is a process known as photo-degradation. This is a breakdown of surface cells of exterior surfaces that occur when they are left exposed, unfinished, for as little as four weeks. Factory finishing prevents photo-degradation of surface fibers because the coating applied to the board or trim protects the surface from degrading due to ultraviolet exposure.
