CPD Day

Leapfrog was closed on Friday 30th September for our staff CPD (Continous Professional Development) day. The staff made good use of this opportunity and completed a course in International Paediatric Emergency First Aid (given by 'First Aid International') at Annerley.

Kristrun and Fe completed this certification back in March, but it was decided that we would all do it together again.
We had a great day with Sarah Walker who many of you may know from the courses Leapfrog and Annerley held for Leapfrog parents and helpers at the start of the year.

This means that all staff members at Leapfrog are now qualified in Emergency First Aid and hold a certificate approved by the Government of Hong Kong.
Many thanks to Annerley and Sarah Walker for a great day!

Fire System Update

Leapfrog´s fire system underwent its annual inspection and maintenance last week. Some equipment (fire extinguishers) had to be replaced as, although they have never been used, they are now five years old. All other systems and equipment  (alarms, emergency lights, control panel)
have been inspected and updated in keeping with our annual obligation to the Fire Services Department.

Slope Maintenance at Leapfrog

The slope maintenance work has started; thank you for your patience. The initial drilling noise is not as bad as we thought it would be and we are all very happy about that! The hoarding will be up for some months to come, however, for this essential upgrading and maintenance work. Click here for more details.

Parents Evening and Open House RESCHEDULED to October 13th

Due to the poor weather conditions at the end of September we had to cancel our Parents Evening. We have now rescheduled the event, and we welcome all parents to come and visit our Kindergarten on October 13th between 6.30pm-7.30pm. Please drop in and meet our staff and current parents. Louise Heap will introduce the defined Learning Areas and Curriculum whilst also outlining our assessment procedures.

Louise will also present the basics of the Synthetic Phonics system that we use to teach the children to recognize letter sounds. This is the same system used by the majority of international schools in HK - don´t miss this fantastic opportunity to learn to help your child to read.

  • 6.30pm - Open House with refreshments
  • 7.00pm - Guided Tour and Introduction to Synthetic Phonics "Get Reading Right"
  • 7.30pm - Exclusive Kindergarten Parents Meeting

Field Trip to Library and 'The Reading Room'

We are delighted to announce that we have arranged a field trip for all the kindergarten children. This will be held on Wednesday, 2nd November, and it will encompass a visit to Sai Kung Library, and 'The Reading Rooom' at Hoi Pung Road.

The children will get to know the library and enjoy a story both there and in 'The Reading Room'.

Both groups will meet at the playground at Sha Tsui Path (The Square) K2 at 9.00am and K1 at 1.00pm.

All children will need to be accompanied by an adult. Please also remember to bring a snack as we will have time for free play and snack in between the venues. We will finish at 'The Square' before leaving for home at the usual time.

Healthy Eating at Leapfrog Kindergarten

Our current theme in Kindergarten is 'Food, Shops and Shopping'. Our class supermarket, complete with home-made shopping bags, purses and money, has already proved to be very popular with the children. We have been printing with food, painting pasta to make necklaces and dyeing rice to make rangoli patterns. We have also discussed 'healthy eating' and talked about the foods that are good for us and exactly why we need to eat them.

Max started by saying that food helps you to grow big and strong. Finn reminded us that egg yolks are particularly good for us, and Kai added carrots, fish and broccoli to the 'healthy' list. Annice and Elisha told us that they like to eat carrots because they might help you to see really well in the dark. With regard to unhealthy food, Jordan knew that too much sugar would rot our teeth (Marco said that we would then need to brush our teeth!), and Hunter added that we can't eat ice-cream all the time because there are no vitamins in it. This last piece of news was certainly a great disappointment for some of the adults listening in at the time!

Having discussed food, we then made sure that we all washed our hands very well, and started to make our own snacks, using tortillas, ham, cheese and a selection of fresh chopped crunchy vegetables. The children enjoyed choosing exciting combinations of ingredients for their own personalised 'wraps'. Better still was when the time came to put them to the test and taste them. Delicious!

Making Snack

 Playgroup Fun in October

This month in Playgroup the children have enjoyed all kinds of Art activities linked to our "Food and Shopping" theme.

We have collaged ice-creams, made ourselves into giant pizza pieces, and for a sensory experience, we had great fun ice-cube painting! We will be using different vegetables to make printed pictures, and pasta for collages too.

During circle time, Hoppers have developed their listening and language skills with stories of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle and "The Wonky Donkey" by Craig Smith.

Tadpoles and Hoppers have both learned new songs including "The Monkey Dance" and "The Fire Truck Song"!

Watch out for Halloween themed art work and fun after the half term break!

NB Please let us know if your child's birthday is coming up and you would like to celebrate in a special way. It's a great idea to bring in a cake, or small cup-cakes to share and we can all sing  a special 'Birthday Song' during circle time!
