Pomona Staff/Faculty Sustainability Newsletter
Volume III, Issue 1 - September 2011
|
Welcome to 2011-12! Welcome to the Class of 2015 and new transfer students, and welcome back to all staff, faculty, and returning students! Although campus was pretty quiet this summer, the Sustainability Integration Office was hard at work! Here's a few exciting things that happened this summer:
Among other things, our Sustainability Action Plan was approved! This is the first time the College has developed a series of goals for sustainability, which will have widespread implications for sustainability on campus. This plan includes new policy statements about purchasing, curriculum, dining, and more. - Pomona's first STARS (Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System) earned the College a Gold rating! STARS helps campuses around the country see what others are doing, share information about their efforts, and compile centralized assessment data for progress in sustainability efforts. See Pomona's STARS submission here.
- Pomona was recognized by the 2011 Sierra Club Cool Schools ranking at #25 and was given a rating of 94 (out of 99) by the Princeton Review Green Schools guide.
The new South Campus Parking Structure and the North Campus Residence Halls also opened this summer. These two facilities are two of the most sustainable on campus, featuring renewable energy systems, native landscaping, and much more. Attend the dedication of our new green residence - halls on October 1 at 3 p.m. and celebrate the greening of Pomona's campus! See more about the parking structure here and more about the new residence halls here.
- Don't forget to like Sustainable Pomona on Facebook for updates on sustainability projects throughout the year!

ReCoop 2011 fall sale a success! This year's ReCoop sale was a great success! ReCoop raised over $12,000 by selling used furniture and other items to incoming students, and all of this funding will go toward 2012 Clean Sweep and other ReCoop efforts. During the sale the Sustainability Integration Office distributed CFL light bulbs, drying racks, compost buckets, and more. - FREE Greenware sustainable event kits Reduce what you send to the landfill after holding an event by eliminating paper plates and disposable utensils. Pomona's new Greenware program allows anyone planning a campus event to checkout reusable plates, bowls, and cups made from recycled plastic plus metal
silverware and 100% recycled napkins. The kit, which also comes with a compost bucket and biodegradable bag, will be customized to the quantities you need and also includes signs designating compost, recycling, and landfill cans. When the event is over just return the kit back to the SIO or Dining Services to be cleaned so it's ready for the next event! To reserve your own custom Greenware kit, fill out the form on this website. - Green Bike giveaway Tired of walking across campus? Get a Green Bike this fall! Join Green Bikes for an info session Thursday (TOMORROW), Sept. 1 at 9:30 in Rose Hills Theater to learn more about how to get a bike.
- New Compost Locations! Three new north campus compost locations were installed this summer - one near each of the new residence halls and one on the west side of Clark I facing Walker Beach. See the map to the right for locations.

ECOMYTH | Sustainable paper disposal
Ecomyth: Recycling is the only sustainable way to dispose of paper.
False. Many paper items can be composted - especially thin paper like napkins, tissue, and paper towels. Start the year off right by checking out a compost bin for your room. Not only can you compost vegan food scraps that you might eat while studying, but thin paper products can also be composted. When the bin is full just unload the contents in one of several conveniently located campus locations. And when you're dining at Pomona, make sure to compost your napkins in the bins next to the tray returns!

Sustainability in the News
Los Angeles considers changing its recycling policies for apartments. Apartment buildings throughout Los Angeles use different disposal services for trash, making it hard to keep recycling uniform. The city is currently in the midst of discussions about changing this system but the private companies are not happy about potentially losing business.
Electric car breaks record, driving 1,000 miles on one charge. In mid-August, the German engineered "Schluckspecht" drove 1,000 miles without needing to be recharged, a feat that could have widespread implications on the Electric Vehicle market. Though the car is not meant for consumers, it could signal to the world what electric vehicles are capable of.
