It's Bikini Season!
Hey beach bums! It's that time of the year again. whether you and your dog are sitting poolside or ocean-side, there are a couple of things you should know to keep your pooch healthy throughout the summer.
*Unlike humans, Dogs are unable to sweat to keep cool, so make sure you find a shady spot, or bring your own shade (i.e. tent, canopy, large umbrella)
*ALWAYS hav e water available for your dog and yourself! Keeping hydrated is crucial to avoiding heat exhaustion. Pool water is not sufficient as many pools are chemically treated or, like the ocean, are made of salt-water which will actually increase dehydration.
*Sunscreen, its not just for humans! Dogs with short hair, or no hair are easily exposed to the detrimental effects of the suns harmful rays. Like you they are at risk for skin cancer or sunburn. Sunscreen coupled with shade helps lessen these effects but do be careful of the ingredients. It is best to buy a 30 or higher SPF sunscreen that is safe for babies and blocks UVB as well as UVA rays. And, as always, please remember to only buy brands that do NOT test on animals. Here is our favorite brand.
*RIP TIDE!!! Imagine this scenario, because it could happen to anybody... You throw your dogs favorite ball into the ocean, he leaps in after it, and before you know it, the tide has carried your your dog out, the ball is nowhere to be seen and your dog is struggling to swim
the farther he is sucked out to sea. Make sure you always check the current before planning a trip to the beach, and take into concideration that currents change, and since dogs are not able to be at the beach when lifegaurds are on duty, the safest thing you can do is get a doggie life jacket.
*Dont forget to have fun with your companion animals and stay safe and cool! Come in to our retail store and check out all of the great gear and summer treats we carry.
