Dear Friend,

In this special Valentines newsletter dedicated to Fritz, we are going to share some very special animal love stories that may seem unlikely, but remind us of the unconditional nature of true love. Don't miss out on our special offers and coupons as well as a list of upcoming events.

We would like to dedicate our special Valentine's newsletter to our oldest Muddy Paws resident Fritz. Fritz just passed away this past Friday and we have all been crushed by this loss.  After being helped into a rescue organization and then given a second chance for a loving life with Maryann Jacobson, owner of Muddy Paws, Fritz took on the mission to help everyone he came into contact with feel that same comfort and happiness. If Fritz had been a person, he would have been the one we all told our secrets to. He made our bad days a little better and always greeted everyone with a wagging tail that made you smile. Fritz, you will live on in our hearts forever.
An Unbelievable Love Story....

"When elephants are rescued and retire many pack their bags for the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. They arrive there one by one but stay there two by two. Elephants mate for life and do better with a companion so every elephant that comes here searches out someone tospend most of their time with. Sanctuary co-founder Carol Butler says, "Its like best girlfriends. Its just like us, you know somebody that they have to relate to they have something in common with. Debbie has Ronnie, Misty cant live without Delorie and possibly the closest of all, Bella and Tarra,  This is her best friend and it just happens to be a dog and not an elephant. Bella is one of more than a dozen stray dogs that have found a home at the sanctuary, most want nothing to do with the elephants and visa versa. But not this odd couple, they are absolutely inseparable, they eat together, drink together, they sleep together, and play together. Tarra and Bella have been close for years but no one really knew how close until Bella suffered a spinal cord injury, she couldn't mover her legs she couldn't even wag her tail. For three weeks the dog lay motionless up in the sanctuary office while the elephant held vigil. 27000 acres and Tarra just stood in the corner. One day co-founder Scout Blake carried Bella onto the balcony to give Tarra a glimpse and her friend and some relief that she was still alive. Then, miraculously Bella's tail started wagging! Black recounts "You know and we had no choice but to bring Bella down to see Tarra, they visited like this everyday until Bella could walk."

After that their love and trust was stronger than ever. Bella even let Tarra pet her belly with her foot! They harbored no fears and no prejudices, just two creatures who never considered their differences as a hinderance to friendship. (Hartman)."

"The story took a sad turn this past November, when sanctuary workers found Bella's body. By all indications she'd been attacked by coyotes. Whether Tarra witnessed it, tried to intervene or was too late - no one knows. All they do know is that where they found Bella is not where she was attacked.  "When I looked around and saw there was no signs of an attack here. No blood, no tuffs of hair, nothing," said director of elephant husbandry, Steve Smith. "And Tarra, on the underside of her trunk, had blood - as if she picked up the body.

"Tarra moved her," Smith said. Steve's theory is Tarra carried Bella, possibly a mile or more, to bring her home.

Whether it really happened that way or not, no one doubts Tarra was that devoted.

"There's nothing we can do to take away her pain," said Atkinson. "The only ones who can help now are the elephants. And that is already happening."

Atkinson said the elephants are "stepping in and stepping up." He said they're spending more time with Tarra and being extra nice - making gestures like giving her a portion of their food.

of course, anyone who's lost a dog knows you can't eat your way out of the grief - as much we might try -- but still nice to know at least Tarra's not alone in this.

It's also nice to see that compassion is much more than just human (Hartman)."

The pair first encountered each other two years ago when Roscoe followed staff to The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in Myrtle Beach.

He was immediately spotted by the orangutan who ambled over to make friends.

Dr Bhagavan Antle, founder of TIGERS said: 'Roscoe looked really thin and a little lost so we fed him and took care of him;

'He followed us through the gate and ran over and found Suryia. As soon as he saw Roscoe, Suryia ran over to him and they started playing. It was unusual because dogs are usually scared of primates but they took to each other straight away. We made a few calls to see if he belonged to anyone and when no-one came forward, Roscoe ended up staying.'

Suryia is an animal ambassador at the preserve helping to raise baby primates but likes nothing better than spending quality time with his canine friend on his day off.

'They will spend a few hours each day together rolling around, swimming,' said Dr Antle. 'Suryia will take Roscoe for walks around the enclosure and even feeds him some of his monkey biscuits. When they are both feeling a little lazy they will go for a ride on the back of Bubbles, our 27-year-old African elephant' ("Suryia and Roscoe").

"In 1999 a kitten appeared in the yard of an elderly Massachusetts couple. It was so small that Wallace and Ann Collito at first thought it was a rat. The Collitos believe someone had thrown the black-and-white kitten over the fence into their mobile home park. They worried about its welfare until they noticed the cat's unlikely caretaker, an American crow.
The Collitos watched in amazement as the crow took the kitten - whom they'd named Cassie - under its wing and began feeding it worms and insects. They couldn't believe their eyes as they watched the crow they'd dubbed Moses feeding Cassie, protecting her from other animals and cawing to keep her out of the street. They knew no one would believe the remarkable tale unless they had proof, so they began filming and photographing the playful kitten and its watchful winged guardian.
Eventually, the Collitos were able to coax Cassie indoors with cat food and she spent her evenings enjoying the luxuries of indoor cat life,

Every morning at 6 a.m., Moses would peck at the screen door looking for his friend, and Wallace and Ann let Cassie out to play. The unlikely friends spent hours frolicking and wrestling outside, and the Collitos filmed the playful pair's escapades for five years until one day Moses quit showing up. American crows live only seven to eight years in the wild, so it's thought that Moses passed away.
Ann Colito died in 2006, but Cassie - who's now 12 years old - still lives with Wallace in their Massachusetts home, and Cassie and Moses' story will continue to touch lives and teach lessons about friendship for years to come."
