Employee Rights Notice Posting
The National Labor Relations Board has agreed to postpone the effective date of its employee rights notice-posting rule at the request of the federal court in Washington, DC hearing a legal challenge regarding the rule. The Board's ruling states that it has determined that postponing the effective date of the rule would facilitate the resolution of the legal challenges that have been filed with respect to the rule.
The new implementation date is April 30, 2012.
Most private sector employers will be required to post the 11-by-17-inch notice on the new implementation date of April 30. The notice is available at no cost from the NLRB, which has additional information on posting requirements and NLRB jurisdiction. Get yours here: Employee Rights Poster

Volunteer or (Unpaid) Employee?
Something to Consider
If you are in a business that's for profit- there is no such thing as "volunteer work."
Volunteers are individuals who donate their time to work (for religious, charitable, or humanitarian reasons) for nonprofit groups or state and local public agencies. There is no provision for a for-profit business to have volunteers. So having an employee say I'll stay late on a "volunteer basis" or possibly having a friend who knows you've been extremely been busy and wants help by "volunteering" at work to get the company caught up are situations that for-profit businesses should be avoiding.
If you are a non-profit, and an employee wants to volunteer, you need to be sure that the work he or she does is different from the normal job and is not displacing a paid worker. |
